Tyre wear odd?

I have a 2.7 that has some odd tyre wear? I bought a new set of tyres all round for some design 90's a year ago. Looking at the tyre wear I saw they were wearing on the inside edge (or so I thought) even though I had then tracked (though I accept they need doing fairly regularly). Then when I took a closer look I saw that it is only wearing on the inside edge of one of the tyres?! What could this be? I know the car had a new lower wishbone on the same side as the tyre wear just before I bought it (two years ago)...could some other geometry be a-miss? I have also fitted a new anti rollbar bracket and bushes on ther front (had to have new lower mount...again..I think it was on the same side). Suggestions please....[&:]

The suspension is fully adjustable; camber, castor and toe (tracking), front and rear. If you just had the tracking done then that would just be front toe. You need to get a 4-wheel alignment done.

Yes I was going to get ALL of the settings adjusted but I wanted to be sure there weren't any other faults that may be predisposing this odd wear before I pay out for it to be done and then have to take the suspension apart because something is wrong...if you see what I mean? Just wondered if there was anything in particular that I should look at that commonly goes wrong with the 944 suspension?

Nope. Only the front ball joints or bushes, all of which I'd expect to be picked up during a 4-wheel alignment.

Will jack it up and check the other ball joint. Maybe worth replacing the bushes..I'm sure it will only help with making the handling even better (car has done 135000 miles)...then send it for a full on 4 wheel alignment and camber/castor check at a pirelli centre.

Cheers

Unless you go with aftermarket front bushes they are not available without replacing the arms. As of now I would not recommend you do that pending me finding out if a second set of PowerFlex bushes are destroying themselves, although PowerFlex seem keen to get to the root of the problem. If this set does break up I will offer them my car to try to get to the cause.

Kev, because everything is adjustable it only takes a heavy whack on a kerb, or brick, or pothole to move something a few mm out of alignment. Also, if you only have the tracking done, it 'could' be that his has now knocked something else out of true.

The only way to know for definite is a full 4 wheel geometry check. Whereabouts in the country are you? My local independant suspension place does a 4 wheel check for £79 and then charges a standard labour rate if any adjustment is needed? Seized adjusters can push this figure up at an alarming rate []

I am in the high wycombe area. Will have a look and see. Will soak the adjusters in WD40 the day before! (had that problem on an old mini and had to take it home and replace the track rod ends myself so they could be adjusted as they were old...and shot)

Don't know if you have a Tyrespot where you are, but my local one has just got a new computerised 4 wheel alignment machine in. Handily, I went in there in my BM two weeks ago when they were training the staff to use it, and got a freebee[:D]. Like a new car! I asked the manager, and they were pitching a full alignment check including adjustment at £70 - not sure if that included VAT, but did include adjustment!

What? It has a diagram saying loosen this bolt and move that part? It has to be that level, these are effectively tyre fitters after all. My indy won't trust Protyre, he pays them to use their gear and does it himself.

It's a fair point, but the computer works in real time, so they actually losen what they need to (and no it doesn't give you a diagram), so when adjustments are made, you know wether it's getting closer to tolerences or not. The printout at the end confirms it all (gives before and after readings).

Take your point about tyre fitters, but I guess that's what the training is for! I guess with experience, they'll be able to make the changes faster, but as it's a fixed price - as long as the end result is okay, it don't matter!

My local tyre place (christchurch tyres) has the expensive kit with the screens and fancy printouts and I believe there is an option to look at pics that show where the nuts and bolts are to make each adjustment. We were discussing the new machine and its merits over the older one, this was one of the features available, (2 or so years back). They also do Ferrari work for the garage in Lyndhurst, so i have had a good look under a 360 - very flat floor with lots of aero tweaks but V/cheap and nasty fixings to hold it in place.
