Tyres again!

I have just shod my A5 all round with Uniroyal Rainsport 3's. I have to say the grip is outstanding. They look pretty trick too.

I have just fitted Dunlop ST Sport Maxx RT's to mine, I'm very happy with them so far, very quiet with amazing grip both wet and dry...it will be interesting to see how they do over winter being listed as 'summer' tyres...I don't think this is that relevant for the climate we get here, well certainly not when in the south of the country.

Pete

I have had Dunlop sports on the Audi also. Good tyre. I have never fitted winter tyres in the UK. Snake oil in my opinion.

I know its a regular subject but I can't find a recent post on tyre choices.

I have run several sets of Falken 452's on my 944S2 Cab, but they are no longer available in our sizes.

What are people using for a road car driven year round? I don't need anything extreme, just good all round handling (especially in grotty weater) and ideally quiet.

thanks

William

I have Pirelli P7’s. Car is not used all year round so can’t comment on the winter performance but they are good in the summer.

On the subject of winter tyres they most definitely are not snake oil. There is a very good reason why they are mandatory fitment in the Nordics and Alpine regions during the winter months and that is that they perform better than summer tyres in low temperatures and in snow which reduces accidents and keeps traffic moving. In the UK, such conditions are rare these days but you will still get better dry grip and better wet grip from a winter tyre than a summer tyre if the temperature is less than 4 or 5 degrees. Compound, construction and tread pattern are all quite different. Horses for courses.

Loving mine Rob,,,,

grip so well and look pretty good with the little sharks fins,,,,,,,,,

shame about the big screw that went through the one of the back tyres after a few weeks old but perfect since fixed,,,,,jasonp

I initially only had my rears done but the grip was so good that it was putting the front to shame and causing some bad loss of grip at the front. I quickly had the frons done to match and I have to say they are the best tyres I have ever had on the Audi.

I'm running Nexen nfera su1's although I have not done many miles on them yet the ride is noticeably more compliant than on the previous tyres.

I've been using Nexens on my E39 & current E61 BMW's for years & found them very good-now got them on the rear of the trackday car as well!

They are now listed as an Official Tyre supplier to Porsche specifically for the Cayenne-can't be that much wrong with them.

Roger,,

with respect i choose my tyres because i read lots of good stuff about them fitted to 944s,,,,

budget didnt come into it,,,

I had rainsports on my og s2 also,, if memory serves me well,

each to there own,,jasonp

BMW ran Nexens as standard fit for a while, I'm happy with them so farand they are certainly better than the GT radials that were on there previously. I doubt I will wear them anytime soon as the ones they came off still had 5mm on them, only changed them as they were old and hard.

Budget did play a factor but they are an A rated tyre, I've spent a fortune on it this year and not likely to rag the dog's danglies off it.

I have GT Radial Champiro HPY on the 968, and the A4 think they were very good value for money, the A4 has done 22K on the current set and they are just about dead,

but the price has doubled for them this year, so no idea what to go for

In an attempt to drag this thread back closer to the poster's original question...

Toyo Proxy T1-Rs - £250 on blackcircles.com for a full set, fitted. Great in the dry, pretty good in the wet, especially considering the cost.

[EDITED: I thought your comment was a funny, tongue in cheek jest. Regrettably, somebody didn't take it as such. JS]

I've had Toyo T1-Rs before, they have quite a soft sidewall so benefitted from a couple of psi more in them. Did loads of road miles on them and had them round the 'Ring and the F1 circuit with no complaints. Put them on an MX-5 and the softer mor compliant sidewall was loads of fun.

Currently running Nankang NS2-Rs and really liking them, surprisingly so in the damp/wet. I wouldn't like to make a call as to whether I prefer these or Yokohama AD08-Rs - based on performance. Once you take price into account then it's a no-brainier for the Nankangs.

I'm about to get some yoko v105's for my 996 - I'm a big fan of Yokohama tyres, AD08 is a great road/track tyre.

I knew that I shouldn't have asked that question, but thanks to all those who gave some helpful ideas about what I might look at.

I'll let you know what I do.

William

When driving on 16" wheels I had a set of Toyo T1-R for a short while on the turbo, and they turned out so dangerous because of the soft sidewalls that I swapped them for a set of Brigdestone S-02. The same was noticed by friends running them on 17" wheels on 944 and other cars. I have had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup since I have been running 17" wheels but will consider a Bridgestone alternative when they wear out. With more than 400 hp I think it is important to use N-rated tyres.

For those who have had posts deleted I am sure you won't be surprised. Personally I am completely sick of this whole continuing farce and will now leave it to the other Admins to release Rogers posts from the Moderation pen.

Believe it, or not, we have now been threatened with the police. I will not comment further on the subject.

back on the original subject of tyres, I have 17's on the 968, Cup 1, not the CUP2 in the picture,

what is the consensus of Nangkang NS2 not the NS2-R, think they have quite a blocky tread and might be a bit noisey I dont track the car but do tend to drive fairly enthusiasticly at times, the rears are starting to show some signs of rubber loss on the HPY's

I would like to stick with Asyemetric treads as i think they are quieter,

Any suggestions, and cost is a consideration!
