Just thought I would mention. I needed two rear tyres for my 993 and after checking around finally went to Elite Direct at Rainham Essex, on the A13, watch it though there is a Gatso right outside the entrance. Just to clear a point, they are no connection with Elite Garages in Sussex.
Got two Pirelli P Zeros 285 x 30 ZR18 N3's for £200 each fitted and balanced which was the best price I could find. It must have been Porsche Good Friday as there were five others there.
Service was very good, they were very careful raising the car on a small lift positioning blocks under each jacking point. Finally something I have never seen before at any tyre emporium I have used, they made the final tighten of the wheel nuts with a torque wrench. In my opinion well worth checking out if you want tyres. They also do a full alignment check and adjustment if required with similar print out that I have seen from JZ. I cannot comment on this though, as I did not have alignment done as will run the new tyres for a few miles first.

Roger to that.
Have used Elite Rainham for years and I can't see them being beaten for price or service.
Go on a Sunday morning and its like the Cannonball Rally. Never seen so many exotics in one place at one time.
No connection etc....

Richard what is the treadwear value on the Rossos? It might be worthwhile having a look at the various values across the usual contenders, which might help to rule out different driving styles that will influence everyone's personal experiences with tyre life.

SO2s are 140 which I suspect is probably similar to the Rossos - my gut instinct is that the Contis will be the ones with a significantly higher treadwear value...
 
When I bought my 993 on its original 17" cups, it had been fitted with Nokian tyres in 2002. After about 25,000 miles the wear bars were showing 5.5-6mm. Unfortunately not N rated but they certainly could last!!
The car also tracked straight and true (wandering wheels thread)
My local OPC now tells me to change the ball joints on the track rod ends (only £328 & VAT) because it might be them and advise me that if I revert to 17" wheels will have to have a full re-alignment check done.
They must be desperate for the work to resort to untruths like this.
 
OK Alex - I thought I knew about tyres but obviously not. Where do you find the treadwear value for a tyre?
 
It's normally on the side wall...maybe the Rossos are that soft they do not even bother!

Can't remember whether I have seen it on all tyres or not. There is normally a value for traction (or something similar) as well.

My Pirelli's only did about 4.5k miles legally and ran them on too long (at least another 2k) but it was summer! Finally had them changed as car was getting too twitchy the fitter said there's a pair of six pointers! Apparently you get three per tyre - ouch.

Fitted Pirellis again but suspect they wont last long. I ask can you swap just a pair or do you have to do all four if switching brands as the front are still going strong.
 
Have to do all four if I dont want Pirellis again - no great loss as far as I'm concerned if it saves me a bit in the future.

I've got Rossos on my road wheels and Conti's on my track wheels. I really can't urge you strongly enough to go and buy a set of Conti's. They will grip in both wet and dry conditions, they have a fantastic life and they give really good feel. As soon as my Rossos are spent, they'll be replaced with Conti's.

Forget all the rubbish certain people say about them; they're either ill-informed or were dropped on their head at birth! [:D] Go out and buy a set - you won't be sorry!

I was disappointed in the wear rate of my Conti SC N2 (18's) lasted approx 2.5k -3k. They seem to get good press (escpecially on here) so I am trying them again. (My alignment has been set to RS settings since the original).

What pressure should I run ? (Book states 36/44 -Essential Porsche 993) but I know people run lower?

any advice?
 
My rear conti's usually last about 7,000 miles, less if I try harder. I would think a track day could shred any tires, if you were 100% committed.
 
What should the tyre pressures be if using 18" rims on a C4.
Does anyone know the differance between P Zero Rosso and P Zerp Asemetrico or what ever you call them.
 
For what its worth I get about 10 to 11000 out of a pair of rear pirellis and way over double that from the fronts. Because of the width of the 18's you will get more wear in the centre. This due to the tyre literally bulging out at the middle at high speed, so explained my tyre expert. I must admit, the way the rear pirellis wear is scary.

Got 9000ish out of my rears (PZero Rosso on 18s), but I'm sure this is also down to using around 36-37 in them as opposed to the 44(!) recommended pressures, which gives good feel. If you use the "˜advised' pressures, it's like driving across rocks, which is great on a good smooth continental road on a lovely sunny day[:)], but is a bit disturbing when it's "˜slashing it down' driving across the moonsurface they call roads in this country.[:mad:]
 
so no real concensus on this then - Contis that last 3K and Pirellis that last 11K and glowing recommendations for everything.

you have a rear wheel drive supercar..... your rear tyres are not lasting long...... the answer is there somewhere [:-]

I guess tyre wear totally depends on driving style, like fuel consumpton. If I drove like a hooligan, lighting up the rears everytime I left the lights, and swinging the tail out round every roundabout (as I'd love to do) then I'd be lucky if they lasted a week.
