TYRES AGAIN !

GOOFY

Was at OPC yesterday and overheard a customer told that they would only be sold a complete set of 4 Michelin's even if they only needed one, due to N rating ! The OPC service personnel then conducted a discussion on breaking the set of 4 until the head turned up as said no under any circumstance, as the set they had was the last in the country with that particular rating (for a Boxster S !)

I digress, but scary if you only need one. The purpose of this thread is I need a full set, but I have the M030 suspension. Any recommendations of which 17" tyres offer the best combination with this stiffer set up. I am the very occasional track day person, but personally would prefer a more compliant tyre to compensate for the stiffnes of M030. Any suggestions ?

If you have 4 tyres of the same make, model and 'N' rating put on your car, how long can you argue that all 4 are in the same condition to be a valid and matching set?

As soon as you drive off the rears will start to wear more than the fronts so after a few miles I would say there is argument against what the OPC was suggesting.

I've always been told to keep the axels in line and have duly done so, afterall the 2 rears or the 2 fronts will broadly wear in line with each other.

So, which tyres have you got on at the moment, that you want to replace?

I've always stuck to Michelin P.S. they were expensive but lasted for ever.

My 550 Anniversary runs 18s and I've been very impressed with Pirelli P Zero Rossos. The set I've just polished off did four half-track days and 13000 miles and were still just about road-legal. They were N4 all round. Have just replaced them at Qwik Fit - couldn't find N4s in the right size for the front so this time my rears are N4 but the fronts are not N-rated. Its has been interesting to compare them against MPS (admittedly 19s on a 987), which we found "went off" a lot faster under the same conditions.

Hi All

Many thanks for your response. The reason I need to replace all 4, is that the rears are worn out, but the front although within legal, are over 10 years old ! (The original set). I know - I am ashamed I have not driven the car hard enough ! BTW I'm still on my original discs and rear pads (just about 80% worn !). I have been quoted Continentals from Quick Fit, what do you all think ? Very happy with the Mich's but feel they wear quickly.

Mich's but feel they wear quickly

what??only 10 years wear[:D]

i would say that in my experience mich psports wear MUCH better than any other, especially contis which i seem to go through every 6-7k miles!!

Like Spyderman, my 986 S runs 18"s and I've been very happy with Pirelli P Zero Rossos N4s. With general running about and a few track days I've managed to get about 15000 mls (from fresh down to 3mm) on the rears at least.

The Pirellis seem to have better grip in both the wet and the dry compared to the Michelins I've had previously. The Pirellis appear to hang on longer but break away more suddenly (still very predictable though) than the Michelins , which tend to break away more progressively. 'Fraid I have no expeience of Contis.

Anyone got knowledge of running Bridgestones on a Boxster - mine appear to be a good overall choice(came on the car originally)?

I ran Pirelli Rosso's on a Boxster S good grip in all conditions up to a point when they'd let go very suddenly as if hitting a patch of ice although it could be caught ok, changed to Michelin Pilot Sports brilliant gradual fade on the grip when pushed and wear rate was very good.

Since changing to the Cayman S I had Continentals to start with good all around grip and feel for everything wet or dry but wear rate was high, when the rears got low usual thing with N rated not being available, fronts were only half worn, changed to Michelins very good and good mileage, couldn't get correct N rating for the rears and the fronts were past 3/4 worn so if I had changed the rears then fronts wouldn't be available to match later so changed to Bridgestones. Been using them for 8 months and grip seems really good in wet & dry, good feel of the road and wear doesn't appear bad either.
