Tyres for 4S

ach

New member
I have Continental on my 4S and the time has come to change them... In general I am satisfied with them, except that I find them rather noisy...
I am seeking your advice and experience... I want to find a good compromise between the grip, comfort and as low noise as possible.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I also have a 993 4S and previously had a 993 2S which was on Continentals.

I have done quite a lot of miles in my 4S (22,000 in last 20 months) and have been running on Bridgestones. I have got through a couple of sets of S0-2 N2's and I am now running S0-2A's N3. In my opinion (others may disagree!!) the S0-2 were great when new but I thought that the wet weather grip deteriorated quite quickly when they were only part worn. The S0-2A have I feel maintained their wet weather grip for far longer (and we have had a lot of rain this year!). The tread pattern of the S0-2A is still directional like the S0-2 but has 4 straight wide channels which I assume help with the water dispersal. If you look on some of the tyre distributor websites or on Bridgestones they have photos of the tread pattern and you will see what I mean. In most sizes the S0-2 has been superseded by the S0-3 but in my experience for 993 4S S0-3 are not available but the tread pattern looks the same as S0-2A in anycase.

Perhaps they changed tread pattern from F1 experience?

Not sure how the S0-2A's perform on a track, it may be the opposite to my every day findings. With other cars that I have owned I have often used Pirelli for track days.

As far as comfort and noise are concerned I have no complaints but without back to back comparison with Continental it is hard to compare.

Hope this is info is of some help.

Thank you Mark, very comprehensive advice indeed! Never had Bridgestones before, but will check.

Do you have any experience with Michelins? I heard they are quite grippy both on wet and dry surfaces as well as on the track...

I have continentals on my C2 and find them to be quiet. Tyres do tend to get noisier when they are worn, but if you want to change Michelin are probably the best there is, and you pay for it!

Hi again Andrew,

I have not had Michelin tyres on a 993 but have had good experience on other vehicles. I would probably have tried Michelin on my car as in the past although expensive they do tend to give high mileage at the expense of ultimate grip, however although Michelin list a Pilot Sport in 285/30 and 225/40 with N1 rating I have never been able to locate a local dealer (I am in the West Midlands) with any available stock, they always say that they are on back order and have been ever since they can remember. I think that the fact that it has an N1 designation and has not been superseded with an updated specification (i.e. with N2 and then N3 etc) means that it is quite an old tyre now and unless they have a new production run, then all existing stocks may have been exhausted.

Nevertheless, if you can find a supplier with Michelin tyres to suit I think that they would be worth a try. As we all know they are a top quality tyre and the latest 997's are often equipped with Michelins.

Let us know how you get on.

Tyres on a 993 are very important and it would be good to build up a list of experiences from other 993 users.

Cheers,

Mark

A tip if you decide to go for Michelins- Costco typically have some of the best prices on Michelins as they deal exclusively with this one make. Either go to Costco or get your local Kwik Fit to price match. I did this a couple of weeks back. I got a good price and it saved me the 25 minute drive to Costco.

Thanks to all for good advice.
I think I will go with Michelins this time and I will post my experience as soon as I have some [8|].

I run Michelins on both my cars and find them excellent, have done 7k miles with them on the 993tt and they are only half worn on the back. For some reason tyre noise is ok on the 993 but much noisier on the 968, probably down to the lower refinement of the car. However, on the 968 it looks like they are going to last 20k miles.

Very happy with them, loads of grip wet or dry and they do last longer than all the other tyres I have had.

www.event-tyres.co.uk are priced pretty well, they do mobile delivery and fitting and I used them to replace all 4 Michelins on my Audi. Worked out cheaper than Costco and on checking the tyres I noticed they were only 2 weeks old!
