Tyres for 964

Does anyone have any experience of Vredestein tyres on a 964 please?

I have read as many posts as I can find on tyre recommendations but am still not sure what to do. I don't do track days, and don't drive the car anywhere near to it's limit. What, therefore, would be reasonably ecconomical replacements.

Incedentally, I am also considering changing these 18" wheels for similar 17" versions to soften the ride.

Thanks, Johncolt

One issue you need to consider is that an insurance company MAY invalidate your insurance if you have not used N rated tyres. This was pointed out to me by a tyre retailer when I was considering changing to Toyo Proxes on my car.

Whether an insurance company would actually go this far or not is the $64,000 question, but you should have the possibility in miind.

Highly unlikely and 'N' rated tyres didn't exist when our cars were new...!

Nick,
on my last renewal I was asked about the tyre rating so I wouldn't bet against this being a problem.
I have Pirelli "P" Zero's on mine. Remember "Power is nothing without control."

Tyre rating is not the same thing as the Porsche 'N' rating though - my Toyo T1Rs are speed rated to the load and max speed of my car, yet are not 'N' rated. The 'N' rating refers to supposedly special Porsche approved compounds or other tyre construction designed specifically to suit/enhance the handling characteristics of the new cars that they build. The speed and load ratings have always existed and been relevant and crucial to the weight and performance of the car you are fitting them to - the Porsche 'N' rating is far less so on cars of our age, imho.

Each to their own![:D]

Yes and a little bit no, Porsche do according to the Michelin tyre guru we had as speaker have altered compounds, tread design and spec, Porsche put their componds through a test of their own, and then rate accordingly, N0, N1 as each new development comes along. Providing a manufacturer is willing to submit their tyres to Porsche for the work etc.
Moreover, they do have lists for older cars, even though they may not have been applicable at the time.
And yes, if the tyre rating is adequate for the car, N ratings are not a valid reason to invalidate your insurance, otherwise there would be specific exclusions written into the policy.

I thought that is what I'd said?!![:D][:D]

Back to the OP, I had Vredestein Sessantas on my old 944T and I was very impressed with them. Very strong grip, especially in the wet and very progressive when they started to slide.

I got mine from Camskill online, good price and great service too.[:)]

Would have thought as long as you get the correct speed and loadrating for you car you can use any tyre! well with in reason .... i wouldn't chance part worns!

If in any doubt stick to what Porsche recommend, see attachment

Apologies no attachment .... Excuse my ignorance, but how can i up load a .pdf file. Adobe Reader doesn't appear to let you save a .pdf file as a gif, txt, jpg file ???

if there in the spec pay your money and take your chances, the tyre company with the best adverts is not nes the best tyre for your car so it comes down to what your doing ie tracking or country drives,if your driving miss daisey i cant see the point of million pound tyres.
I just put some hi spec but cheap tyres on the wifes mazda rx8 and thery are mega and grip very well even in the wet, drift progressively and at £120 a pair they are cheap,i no its not rear engined but rear wheel drive and same sort of power so there going to go on the porsche as well to try them.
it was avons what were on it and they were not a patch on these.

Thanks to everyone for the advice so far. I hope this is useful for everyone.

Dirtgod - have I missed it, but did you actually say what make these tyres were?

Johncolt.

If it helps, I've just put a new set of Continental Sport Contacts on my 964. They are N1 rated and came out with a three star rating for dry and wet handling when tested by Porsche in 2008 for the 964. I shopped around and got them off the net from The Tyre Shopper at just under £500 fully fitted, new valves and balanced exactly. National Tyres fitted them and used plastic weights on the inside rim so the outside rims look completely clean and smooth. Really pleased with them and quite quiet too.
Regards
Chris
