Tyres for 981S

Currently have P Zeros (N0) fitted, and actually find them very good in wet and pretty good in the dry, no real complaints. Also have completed 3 trackdays at Brands Indy, and as expected pretty good when in warmed up in sweet spot but get a bit' slidey' after a few laps, but predictable. 20 inch rims limits choice and I have narrowed down to Goodyear Eagle Ass 2 (N0), or the newer P Zeros with N1 marking .
Does anybody have direct experience with making the change to the N1 Pirellis or to the Goodyears? I have eliminated fitting track day tyres as fitment limited and wear/cost not worthwhile.

I would appreciate any input.

Thank you.

I shall be doing a private track test on my 718 CS PDK at Knockhill in a couple of weeks. My car has the new 20" P-Zero N1 tyres fitted as standard equipment.

This will track session will also be a useful tyre test of the evolution P-Zeros. I did not like the N0 P-Zeros at all when I briefly tried them on my Cayman R.

I intend to swap the N1 P-Zeros for Michelin PS4S N0 tyres as soon as they become available at my local supplier. I like Michelin tyres. I have no experience of Goodyears.

Thanks for the input Brian, I am also waiting for the PS4S's, as I had Michelins on my previous Porsche, but may have to compromise in the short term (5 Brands GP circuit track days booked), hence my initial question. Out of interest are you able to expand on your reasons for not liking the original P Zeros? I have been following your thread on your 718 PDK, and have found your input/views very interesting and helpful.

I assumed you were wanting to stay with N rated tyres. Much better than PS4S are Cup2 tyres, good wear for a sports tyre and tremendous step up in terms of track grip. I picked up 5 seconds on Silverstone GP at end March going from MPSS to Cup2.

Hi, thanks Ralph, yes, the PS4S's have been N rated (confirmed by Michelin and Porsche). Unfortunately the Cup tyres are not available in the size I need for the front which is 235/35/20 otherwise I would have tried them. The 20 inch rims do limit the choice available.

Thanks Ralph, good point, I must admit I thought that 235 was the max for the front an 8J rim, but according to the website you linked although 225/235 is ideal, 245 would be the maximum, so possible.

I will investigate further.

I didn't like the original N0 P-Zeros because of their grip inconsistency after a few hot laps. Similar to original PS2's in that regard. They got a bit slidey.

Some have described the NO P-Zeros as "Ditch Finders". I'll be watching very closely how the new N1 P-Zeros perform on my 718 CS after a few hot laps on my track test. Rory Butcher will also be driving my car so if there are any grip issues, he'll find them!

The PS4S is a fabulous tyre. It has a dual compound construction just like the Cup 2's. Unfortunately Cup 2's are not available in N rated sizes for 718 CS, and as my car is new I'm still tied up with warranty restrictions. I had Cup 2's on my CR. They were outstandingly good.

By the way I asked the Michelin tech people about going up a tyre size on my 20" 8.5" and 10.5" rims. The 265 section on the rears are the minimum recommended for 10.5" rims. I was favouring a 275 section but Michelin tech people advised against it on my new car as it is under manufacturers warranty. I would make a guess that when the 718 GTS comes along, it'll have the same wider 20" wheels as I have specced, as standard. Maybe then Porsche will increase the tyre section to 275/285 and N rate it. If they do, I'll buy 'em.

I will be reporting back following the tyre and track test at Knockhill on my 718 thread, and more fully in my article for Porsche Post.

Brian

Thanks Brian, good to know you found the same as me on track with the N0's, even using the same 'technical term' as me regarding slidey! Don't know about being ditch finders though, I don't think they are a bad tyre, just a bit compromised, and there are better out there.
