tyres for 996 C4S 1999

i am a complete newbie to porsche after 15 years of superbikes. I am getting old and too scred .
just bought my first 996 199 C4s cab. I would be extremely grateful for advice re alloys and tyres. My wheel are conti 17 inc. shall i go for 18 or 19 inch and what size front and rear

I've just changed from Conti to Pirelli PZero's and the best thing I've done. Road noise has disappreared for one thing! I'm fairly new and made a small but costly mistake this year. I've got 18" wheels however the rears are 18" 11J's and not 10J which means you have to fit the 295/30/18 and not the 265's which is what I orginally bought through National!!! Richard and a few others on the forum kindly pointed out my mistake. I then went through the Cardiff OPC and spent about £290/rear and on the fronts 225/40/18 about £160 incl VAT plus fitting by OPC and Nitro filled... all worked out in the end. There is a thread here somewhere with the Porsche tyre charts.
Cheers

Meng!

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Are you thinking of upgrading the standard 17" wheels to 18"/19", or is it just a tyre recommendation you would like for 17"?

If upgrading, IMO you would be better with 18". The 996 was never fitted with 19's, although people do fit them.

If it is a tyre recommendation, and you are sticking with 17", then there are four Porsche approved options. See http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=230744 . Of those, I have used Conti, Pirelli and Michelins, and I found the Michelins best overall (but the most expensive).

Yes thanks thinking about moving up to 18.. will there be substantial improvement in handling and whats best wheel size for rear 265 295

The correct size for 18" is 10J with 285 as the widest tyre option. How much more you can put on depends on your suspension, spacers etc..

Not sure which model you've got though.. there was no C4S in 99.

Does the C4S has the same tyre configuration as the Turbo... which I think means you could have an 18" with either a 10J or 11J... which is better?

current wheel size 205/50/17 front 255/40/17
i am thinking of 225/40/18 front 285/30/18 or 265/30/18
thanks for all your comments so far sorry for being such a thicko not my subject

Be aware that the lower profile will give you a slightly harder ride and make rim damage from potholes more likely.
I've cracked a couple of rims on high profile tyres; it's not a cheap passtime!
Depends on your local roads a bit i guess.

Moving from 17 to 18s improves the look no end but handling is slightly less fluid and the ride is slightly firmer. Never found the car to grip any better. Managed to slide the car at the same roundabout consistently at roughly the same speed in 2nd gear on 17s and 18s

No problem man, I'm just sure you have a standard Carrera 4, and not a 4S. The 4S came with 18" wheels as standard from MY2002. [;)]

Your car definitly looks better with 285 at the back. Regardring ride.. well it's a sports car not a Rolls. [8D]

The switch at the bottom of the handbrake could be faulty and that could be linked to the roof not opening via the button. On some cars the car has to be stationary and handbrake engaged before the roof will operate. If the switch is faulty and the roof's ecu doesn't know the handbrake is engaged. It doesn't apply to the keyfob as the car is likely to be switched off and the ecu will allow the roof to operate.
If you know someone with a durametric/PST/PIWIS, get the car plugged in to see what the fault is. If not your indy will be able to do it.

spot on handbrake switch problem sorted
18 in so much better than the 17 ... anyone worked how to attach their ipod to the stereo.. dont really want to go down expensive route of replacing unit

There is a company in Germany called Solisto who make an adapter for the iPod, and it can be controlled through the head unit, and also charges the iPod. About £100. Another option would be the Dension unit.

If you don't want control from the stereo, there are cheaper cables you can connect to the Cd changer inputs, but this means losing the CDC (no real hardship). I've seen one called iPorsche which charges the iPod too, or Mark Bennet over on the Boxster forum can tell you exactly how to do it for about £5, but I don't think his method charges the iPod.
