Tyres for an 986

I've had my Boxster S 2002 reg for a couple of months now and I'm not convinced with the tyres the car came with, which are 17".

I am considering replacing these soon with 18", which brand(s) would other forum members recommend?

I've had my Boxster 3.2s 2002 manual just over a year with 32,000 miles logged. The car is fitted with 18" wheels shod with Michelin sport pilots. I find the ride firm on smooth surfaces but on uneven roads a bit harsh. You may be better off with the 17" wheels in my opinion?
Regards,
Martin

I'm on my second set of P Zero Rossos. Seem to be very good all round and go off less quickly on track than MPS.

Thanks guys. I am actually, since I posted this, considering to sticking to the 17"s.

The Michelin Pilots seem to be very popular.

I will look into the P Zero Rossos too, I plan to take it on a track day in a couple of months btw.

Like Spyderman, I'm on my second set of Pirelli P Zero Rossos on 18" Turbo wheels. I prefer these to Pilot Sports, the grip seems better in both dry and wet. Possibly Pilot Sports wear better but I feel that's largely academic as the grip deteriorates more than the P Zeros as they age. In terms of mileage I've averaged about 18,000 miles on the rears (new to 2.5mm) which has included at least three track days. I ran a fresh set (rears 150 miles/fronts 700 miles) at Castle Combe a couple of weeks back on a nice dry hot track) and it was sublime.

To answer your query about ride comfort, I've never once felt the ride was uncomfortable with P Zeros on 18" rims on the Boxster although I do tend to avoid potholed roads as much as possible.

My only issue with Pirelli has been the recent lack of availability which I understand has now been resolved.

[:)]It is a personal opinion, but I have the same spec car,and have fitted 18" GT3Porsche design split rims, fitted with pzeros, they look the business, and the grip is tremendous, they are fragile though and u have to be careful with the polished clear lacquer when cleaning,it does make a difference for cornering, but the ride is very comfortable.
They make the car look more sporty.

Another option a good route to go could be with BBS wheels.
