Tyres for RS

Hi Guys,

If I could interupt for a moment your negotiations with Thomas!!

What road tyres would you recommend.

Piers, I have always been happy with Bridgestone S02 on the road, for grip and wet weather use. Continental contact sports are ok, wear well, have a set of pirelli P zero rosso at the monet,,not as good as the previous mentioned tyres.

I usually get the S02 from Elite tyres at mannings Heath Sussex, they often advertise in the club mag and offer a PCGB price (whether that is higher/lower than normal, I don't know!)
 
Having had two side wall failures on Pirrelli P Zero Rosso, I would recommend Toyo Proxes R888 which are track biased but fun on a wet road ha ha.
 
I would recommend Toyo 888s as well. They are great on track and especially good in the wet as long as there is no standing water. I have just completed a 3000Km tour around France on the same tyres and they performed exceptionally well, even on freshly snow cleared roads (damp tarmac) and on icy roads down to -5C. Wear was negligible in these conditions.
 
I have used 888 on mine for some time and they are fine for track and some road use, but Piers did mention road tyres

Heroics aside, these R rated tyres and particulalry 888 are not much use in standing water, I for one would not like to sit on the outside lane of a drenched motrway running with the beemers and astra vans, even with the fantastic RS brakes , in deep water I am convinced the 888 would not be as effective as a high quality road tyre.
 
The SO2's were the defacto tyre in the 1991 -- 1995 era.

However, I understand that they are getting difficult to find ?

I tried to find a 265/35 18 to match a 2003 set and couldn't do it. Although I bought one, it was an SO2 a ? which had a different tread pattern, and I have seen SO3's spoken of in irreverent terms ...

Pilot Sport 2 ???


 
I've tried SO2, R888 and Cups on mine.

For UK track most of the yr, R888
For Europe track (where it's a lot warmer) on a hot summer day, Cup

For road, unless it's only for sunny sundays, or just to and from track, stick to road tyres. I has R888 in heavy rain once, it's not fun aqua-planing at 40mph on the motorway! The Cup is even worse, much worse!
 
When I bought my 964RS nearly 10 years ago it came with Pirelli P Zero Assymetrico tyres. Being more than happy with these tyres I eventually swapped them for more of the same. They offered good allround performance including ride, noise, great feel, excellent grip for road use and were really superb on wet/very wet tracks although dry track use soon saw them overheat and lose grip. an ideal road tyre ,then.

After a few more sets of Pirelli's , progressing through P zero Rosso and Nero variations, I was temporarily unable to obtain afurther set so happily jumped over to the SO2 type as recommended by the majority. For me this proved to be a big mistake as I hated them. They proved to be very 'greasy' in feel on dry roads even after prolonged scuffing-in. Low levels of grip never improved. In quick sucession I did a wet trackday at Donington where I was barely able to keep the car on track suffering from a total lack of grip and especially feel. A later dry day at Croft was less dangerous but no more impressive. I sold them on the spot and the tyre support at the circuit supplied the much missed P zero's.

Now I know what some of you will think: either I had not worn that vital 1st mil of trad off or I'd bought cheap Taiwanese copies or that I'm just a crap driver. BUT, I discovered that I was by no means alone in this with a number ofPCGB trackdayers strongly agreeing with me. I was left to conclude that maybe some batches are better than others. Whatever, I was glad to see the back of mine and see no reason why anyone would run the risk of such outdated tyres, especially with the new breed of Michelin or Goodyear tyres available. For instance I now have a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's on my road car and I am very impressed in all respects.

I hope this makrs you think hard before you fit those Bridgestones.

I used SO2s on my 964 RS some years ago and liked them. My 993 came on a set of SO2s, which were little used but made in 2004. They are grim in a gripless type way. I imagine it is because they are old?

Anyway they live on the boatanchors and get used for the car to sit on over winter !

I use 888s for the rest of the time. Although I admit my focus in the 88s is trackdays they are absolutely fine on the road as long as there is some heat in. I agree though that like Yokohama A)32s etc in standing water they may be a little iffy.

Interestingly at the top of my road with the SO2s on I get wheelspin when pulling onto the main road. The toyos don't. I think it shows how much tyres degrade with little use.Still you can hold everso long drifts with them.

I would also recommend Nankang NS1s and 2s; I use them on a M5 trackcar and they are great. I know they are not N rated but nor are the toyos. I have also used them on a Jaguar XJR which they suited far better than the harsh Pirelli P zeros it came on. Not the grippiest in the wet the Nankangs, but progressive so they are great for powerslides too.
 
I've got Dunlop DZO2 Direza for track use. Is it safe to swap tyres once or twice ie put track tyres on for trackdays then put road tyres on again afterwards?
 
I use the dunlop track tyre on the road,good as most tyres in heavy rain.
The mich pilot sport road tyre is probably as good as it gets now with a dual compound across the face of the tyre for wet and dry,fairly good tyre on the track also.
I would not go changing tyres regularly on and off rims,as the bead breaker gives the side walls serious grief and can some times damage the tyre.

I run Michelin Pilot Sports (not Cups) for road (and occasional track use) and have no complaints. Used to run S02's and feel the Pilots are a bit grippier in the wet.... although that may be down to the Bridgestones being, ahem, well used [;)].
