Tyres - 'N' rating or not???

I'm sure this has been thrashed to death, but what is the general consensus on 'N' rated tyres? I'm going to need to replace the rears on mine early this year, BlackCricles are quoting £94 for regular flavour Conti's and £150 ea for N2 rated!
From my understanding, the N rating is not only Porsche approval but also side wall stiffness differences over the std tyre. Surely if the speed rating is correct (profile etc), I'm really not likely to notice much difference between the two units? Has anybody done any back to back comparrison?

Life was so easy with the 3.2.....[:(]

This is one i thought was a given that N2 had to be purchased - however as my rears are nearing their end of life i shall watch the comments with interest.

was that for 18s or 17s by the way.

I've always gone with N Rated on my 993 as I do believe that the testing and approval process confirms the N rated tyres as suitable for use on cars with the unusual weight distribution and handling characteristics of 911s - it may not be a coincidence that the "widowmaker" reputation of 911's reduced considerably after N rating began ( along with suspension design improvements )

There is also a lot of evidence that N rated tyres of the same brand / type really are actually different from the non N rated version - visibly different tread pattern etc

Having said that I've never seen such a significantly different price difference between N rated and non N rated tyres- have you looked at other brands, or are you only changing two tyres and so need to keep with Contis (maybe my least favourite tyre of the N rated ones)

Hi Pete,
I've got nearly new Conti Sport 3's on the front so really want to keep it all matching. Having said that, I can't see any N rating on the side walls unlike the rears which are N3!

BTW, are you going to Le Mans again this year? [8D]

Elliot, Wolds tour sound like fun, I'll try and make that with my lad.
 
I was wondering if I can get away with only changing the rear tyres. I'm aware of the "When replacing a tire on an axle, make sure that the tread depth of the new tire does not differ from that of the other tire by more than 30 %" rule. Does anyone know what the tread depth is on a new tyre?

I would be worried about the insurance implications of not fitting "N" tyres. You know how good insurance companies are at squirming out of payment if there is anything "wrong" with a car. There is evidence that most are aware of the "N" fitment requirement for Porsches.

I would not go near non-N tyres, but there was a discussion on the insurance implications over on (I think) the Boxster forum at the time of N2/3 change over on PS2s. Someone made a call to their insurance company and that company said they did NOT require N rated as long as the speed rating of the tyre matched the speed rating of the car manufacturers recommended tyres.
 
I don't think many insurance companies would quibble but you should certainly let them know - as someone said if you had a blowout-related accident and hadn't told them, even if it was nothing to do with the N-rating I'm sure they would try it on...

I tried some non-N rated and wouldn't do it again, can't remember what they were but they wore into ovals for some reason.
