Tyres on a C4

Its time to replace the rear tyres on our C4 again [X(], however the continental tyres currently on the rear which match the type and tread of the ones on the front, are no longer readily available..

My question to the experts is; if we run different tyres on the rear.. treat pattern etc.. will it cause issues/damage with the viscous 4x4 system.?

Thanks Adam.

* The car is never tracked...

I faced the same problem on my C4 ('96 Varioram) a couple of years ago - the car is currently fitted with Continental ContiSport Contact 205/50 ZR17 N2 & 255/40 ZR17 N2 (all replaced about 2 months ago). However it was originally fitted with the same tyres except they were all N1's. I had to replace the rears with N2's because the N1's were no longer available. I'm no tyre expert but it appeared to cause no problems at the time (or subsequently) and that includes a couple of track days. I would probably have run with that combination for some (ie until the fronts wore out).

Which tyres are you faced with having to fit?

Anton

I've got your exact situation... The car is still running Conti N1's... when I replace the rears a few thousand mile ago, I sourced some old stock of N1's at the time, but doesn't look possible anymore...

How are you finding the new Conti's... as our C4 appears just to eat the rear tyres.. so I was think of trying a different brand..

I don't notice any real difference between the N2 & N1's and am not really aware of them wearing quickly. Overall I'm happy with them and the grip seems very good in both the wet and the dry - mind you I've never had anything other than Conti's on the car! Have you had your 4 wheel alignment checked recently as that will affect the wear rate?

Anton

Alignment was always ok and was redone last year, as I got all the dampers changes for the Bilstein sport kit Gert at Carnewal sells...

maybe I just expect too much...

If 1.6mm tread on the rears and 8mm tread on the front doesn't cause problems then I can't see N2 on the rear and N1 on the front making any difference... After all it's only the rolling diameter that has anything to do with it. As far as I can see it's tread wear that is your concern not tread pattern. the 4wd is viscous, as you say, so you'd have to run tractor tyres up back to cause any issues. Might solve your wear problem that?!?

Rears should not exceed twice wear of fronts .. [:-]

Hi Maurice,
Oh - that's news to me - I'd better find a way of wearing my fronts out faster!
Is that for the viscous coupling?

Hi all

Ruth here - Adam's better half, owner of the C4 Cab and I'll be the purchaser of the aforementioned new tyres!

Have come to the conclusion that if I'm spending £400 on 2 new rears, I might as well spend the extra and get all 4 done. The fronts must be pretty old by now anyway.

Question now is, which to go for? Adam is leaning away from the Conti SC N2s, I think due to the wear rate (he can correct me if I'm wrong!). Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric get pretty good reviews all round, but I don't think they're N rated? Have heard some not so good things about Pirelli - can anyone tell me different? Michelin Pilot Sports seem to be the expensive option, but will pay for them if the general concensus is that they're worth it. Is there another alternative? Please don't suggest Toyo's, it's not a track car! ;)

I'm looking at 265/35/18 and 225/40/18...

Thanks

Just had 4 conti sport 2 fitted £521 including vat , valves and balancing
