Tyres - OPC or local tyre shop

I have done 12,000 (no trackdays yet [:(]) on my Bridgestones and they need replacing. I have 305s on the back and so choice (and I suspect availability) is limited. I will probably stay with the Bridgestones as they seem to work.

The question is should I get this done at an OPC and pay a premium or trust my local tyre shop? They do my motorbike tyres without issue but will they track the wheels properly?

I've never used an OPC to replace my tyres and i've always had a good job done.

As it turns out my local OPC uses my local independant tyre centre to do it anyway!

Replacing tyres has got nothing to do with tracking wheels - they are two completely unrelated functions so just use the tyre specialists and save the premium you'll pay an OPC. IMHO the only thing you ever buy from an OPC is something that only Porsche make or are allowed to sell. Porsche don't make tyres - so don't buy them there.

[&o] How many tyres per day does your OPC do compared to a tyre shop?
[&o] How many wheel alignments per day does your OPC do compared to a tyre shop??
[&:] No brainer 1 + 1 = 3 so must be the OPC :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

My local OPC, despite having its own OPC Approved Bodyshop, quite happily uses the local Chipsaway man for small bumper scuffs and alloy wheel refurbs which are all performed in the car park area and not inside there workshop[&o] so I wouldn't be surprised to if they probably use a local tyre shop for the same work you are currently requiring.

Having 2 new front tyres fitted today on my daily driver £130.00 per tyre inclusive from local tyre shop, compared to £188.75 from my local MINI sdealers []

Just be careful when the independant is taking off and putting back on the tyres from the rims as I have had a broken TPMS sensor from this before.

Just remind them that the sensors are there and quite close to the rim, then you shouldn't have an issues.

Find a good tyre depot you trust and can watch them at work - make them aware of any sensors.

If you want the plastic flat wheel weights that you have on currently, and not the stick on lead that most tyre places use, then you can buy a selection of weights in advance from the OPC parts counter.

Normally use my OPC, as tyres are usually replaced at service time.

Basically I get an indication of the best prices and my OPC normally come pretty close. They do the balancing, and any tracking if necessary.

Many thanks guys. My tracking concern is that I am not sure that the front was set up properly and may need looking at. There is no unusual wear, but the front does bump around alot in the tighter corners when driving "with feeling"

I will prolly go to my local tyre place.

i leave the tyres to my local indy-jzmachtech who track and align as well -usually pretty close to best "other"prices

Marc, check who has them...
My usual tyre people had none in stock, nor could they get any for an unamed amount of time.[:(]

I had to go to the OPC who did have them on the shelf.... it hurt quite a bit.
They did do a superb job (onsite) and did a small warranty repair at the same time, would I use the OPC again.... not a chance
The cost was just so wrong but I had no choice as I needed the car for a trip.

This was a few months ago and I only hope they are now readily available.

Thanks Gary. I am just going in for a price check and availability at the weekend, I will be shopping around, however, as I have 305s at the back (like you?) I suspect it will be a trial.

Just to qualify, no weights are 'plastic'. They used to be lead, either coated or uncoated. There are still some about but is illegal for them to be fitted. (ELV Act, since 2005).

Today's choice is powder coated zinc, in individual weight or cut from 60g strips or, the cheap popular choice for most tyre shops, plated steel segments. The latter will eventually rust and don't look good, so insist on the former.

The individual ones, made by Hofmann, would be OE spec and first choice.
