tyres worn out

Hi all. just wondered if any other boxster owners have the same problem.

I have a 3.2s year 2000 986 model.

The car when I bought it had to have two new rears, the car dealer put two un-known tyres on it. within 4-5 thousand miles tyres were bald.

I did not wheel spin or drive fast just drove as normal. Car is returning 32miles per gallon on computer to prove.

So i thought it was just cheap tyres so i put on brand new conti's N2 code.

Now after 3thousand miles they are nearly near 2.5mm again. on both tyres right across tyre.

What can be wrong. tyre pressures are perfect also.

please help and save me another 350 quid.

thanks marc.

If the tyres are truly wearing evenly then this appears to rule out geometry.

My wife's 2.7 987 gets about 20k out of pair of rear Michelin PS2s - but it does do a fair bit of m/way.

Can you tell us more about how the car gets used, mix of roads, etc.

3k out of a pair of good quality tyres does seem poor!

I'm getting around 20k from P-zero Rosso, but am looking for something a tad cheaper.

Event Tyres are cheapest supplier/fitter I've found at £144 each front (haven't checked rear price yet).

Going too cheap, I'm wondering about road noise.

Hi
I drive on motorways also 30 miles per day at 65mph (dont want to get to work to quick).

I am going to porsche specialist on sat for a look at the car. but i dont know what they can find.

Even wear says pressures and geometry are about where they should be. Contis aren't the highest mileage tyre, but even hard driven 911s get more mileage than you are !

Michelin PilotSport will last a whole lot longer so the cost per mile is lower , you just have to stomach the higher initial cost :(

I used to get 14K miles fom Michelin Pilot Sports on my 986 Boxster including at least 1 track day a year. If you are driving gently I can't see how any tyre cheap or expensive would wearout in 4 to 5K miles, if the rear set up is correct and the tyre pressures also correct. Might well be worth a check of the steering geometery and that the bodyshell itself is straight.

I always put Michelin P.S. on my Boxsters.

The price is more than any other tyre but the length of time they last has been exemplery in my book. Mile for mile I think they do work out cheaper but it's a big cost to replace them all at the same time.

It's not something obvious like this is it?

I know very little about this by the way I just thought if it wasn't the car then it must be the tyres.

Another scenario would be too much negative camber with too much toe in that would give the impression of even wear though the geometry is out. Just a thought. The Contis wear very quickly on the rear of my 996 (down to 2mm at 4.5k miles) but the geometry has been checked repeatedly and it has been spot on. The fronts are still 6mm 6k miles later.

I have had 3 Boxster S's and generally get 5/6000 out of the rears. I only use the car for recreation, very rarely on motorways.

Some people get high mileage but must avoid bends or stay in the City.

If the tyres are wearing evenly the pressure must be on spec.?

Bridgstone are harder compound but less sticky so higher mileage.
