As I understand it, it's legal to have different makes of tyres as long as they are paired on the same axle. I personally wouldn't mix and match though. Our cars are high performance and the tyres are designed to enhance that and balance the car, frankly if you want to try a different brand I would change all four. Might be more expensive, but why risk injury or worse for a few hundred quid?
 
Hi, I can't comment on Yokohama's as I've never driven on them but I have used two sets of Bridgestone Potenza S02's. BUT they must be N3 rated not N2 as you said. Check in your Owners Manual. As for the Bridgestones they are excellent. very good grip in both dry and wet, reasonable wear rate and quiet. If I were you, and your buget will stretch to it. I'd go for a full set, and then have the geometry checked by a specialist - you'll be amazed at the diffeernce ! I always buy my tyres from blackcircles.com. They give a great discount on tyres and, and if you choose, will include fitting at any of their affiliated nationwide fitters for an all inclusive price. Let me know how you get on. Peter F F
 
Could someone please provide me with some guidance with regards to tyres.
I have a 1994 Club Sport that needs new fronts. The car is standard and not tracked just enthusiastic road use. What make should I go for? I have read different reviews on different tyres. The backs are currently Pirelli P Zeros N2 rated but I have heard some negative things about them. I presume it is possible to put a different brand on so long as they are on the same axle? Would Yokohamas for instance be ok? Any advise would be appreciated.
 
Thank you both for your feedback. Unfortunately the Owners Manual was not much use. Just referred me to Porsche. From the enquiries I have made (at that includes directly with Porsche) I'm not sure the N rating is too much of an issue. Apparently the various numbers indicate the type of tyre compound used and approved by Porsche but given that these change over time its not even possible to get a tyre with the original N rating as it would have been superseded. Going to stick with Pirelli (albeit fronts wont have an N rating), so that will retain Pirelli front and rear however it not possible to get an N rated Pirelli of the same make as the rear with the same N2 rating. Most recent rating is N3 as suggested in the Post replies so that would mean replacing the whole lot just to have an N3 rating. That doesn't seem to make much sense to me although I know the purists will say you should have N3s all round.
 
By the way Peter, meant to mention that I went to Blackcircles as you recommended. Lovely new Pirellis on the front now. Feels so much better.
 
just fitted a full set of dunlop sport maxx to my 944S2 .. 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 car is transformed..
 
Now have a 968 Sport and tbh when the time is up I shall probably switch to Conti Sports. The feel of these on my 964 is awesome in all conditions (which is key me thinks). For track I have a couple of spare sets of wheels and plan to go back to Toyo's for these...

I am running a mix (sort of) on my Turbo which may unsettle a few. The fronts are a fresh set of Michelin PS3s, with the rears being N rated PS2s. The PS3s are great in wet weather conditions and once worked a bit are quite grippy in the dry! I preferred them to Toyos on many previous cars (I have experienced the T1-Rs, although I shall admit that R888s are a great tyres (albeit a certain taste for road use!). With the above in mind I shall probably go with PS3s on the rear when the time comes. Michelins do tend to last for an eternity though (the fronts I removed had done 15k it seemed and if I am honest were also 4 years old!). On a weekend car I would probably consider something that work a little faster. Contis should be great here and failing that even a track orientated tyre.
 
Seems Bridgestone's getting the thumbs. Tracking the car tomorrow and have inherited and acquired a few sets of wheels with tyre the last few years (anyone want a set of boxter wheels?). Anyway, not sure what rear wheels to use. Choice of Potenza's S-A02 or Conti Sport Contact 2. Anyone tracked with either? Is the leaning still towards the Potenza's? Rear wheels swapped over from a 964 so a slightly wider offset by something like 20mm and they seem to work great (technically a slightly wider rear track too)...
 
Tracked the car for a full day over the weekend using the rears from my 964. Really surprised me the grip and wear levels of the Bridgestone's. Just standard A020 tyres, tried a couple of times to 'break' the grip just to see and they just kept sticking - maybe I just wasn't going fast enough! Will definitely hang on to these and carry on tracking them until they need replacing... The wider track from using the 964 wheel offset was fine, no issues or rubbing even when lifting one wheel on a hairpin.
 
On the subject of tyres, I have 225/50x16 rears & 205/55 x16 fronts , can I fit slightly wider tyres without hindering anything , if so, what size ? ie - 235/55/16 !! or will I have to fit spacers ?
 
Interesting... what were you thinking for the fronts? You are limited with steering bump there. The rears at 235 might be pushing it maybe - unless turbo / celebration body I guess.
 
I am thinking of better grip :) so tyres sizes I am open to suggestions from whet you guys have on, as the 225/55 are not the easiest to find either.. & hold a premium.
