tyres??

Hi

I' m sure this has been asked before but I' m new here so I' ll ask again anyway[;)].

What tyres would be best on my 98 Boxster - I currently have Pirelli' s on there but one tyre has a slow puncture and they are all 3/4 worn so looking to change the set - also, any ideas where the best place to buy/get fitted is in East Surrey area? Has anyone had better/worse experience with certain brands of tyres?

Cheers

My 2002 car came with Michelin Pilot Sport as OE fitment (17" wheels). Their grip wet or dry is excellent and road noise seems low. They do wear quite fast though, rears are shot at c. 12K. Have used P Zero' s on other cars (not Porsche) and found wet grip to be very dodgy!

I saw an article last week in Autocar where the Continentals on their test M5 and Michelins on their 911 were replaced by Pirelli PZero Rosso' s (N4' s for the 911) with outstanding results. It' ll be a while before I need new tyres having only covered 2,500 miles so far but they must be worth serious consideration.
Regards
Bill

I currently have the Zero Rossos on and seems fine but then I have nothing to compare to! I have had a price from Kwik-Fit of £500 for 4 x new Z Rossos fitted, balanced, valves etc - this sounds a good price - anyone know of a better deal out there?

£500 fpr the pirellis P Zero' s seems very cheap - Check to see if they have quoted you the correcr " N" for porsches

I recently changed all the tyres on my BoxsterS (17inch) to Pirelli PZero Rosso (N3) and find them to be excellent. Good dry grip (incl track days) and reasonable wet. Ride and noise is also very good. I had the 4 tyres plus full geometry from Denmead Tyres (nr Portsmouth) for £550. Service was excellent and I can definitely recommend them and the tyres.

Had Pilot Sport Cups fitted yesterday for Bedford and they rock! They' ll not last that long but they have superb grip. Saw me go quicker and quicker yesterday with no fuss.

I would be careful about extrapolating tyre performance from a different type of car across to the Boxster since Porsche work very closely with the tyre companies to optimise how the tyre works, hence the N numbers.

Here is the last set of categories from the February/March edition of Christophorus magazine, the Porsche summer tyre recommendations for 2002.
This comes from an exhaustive round of track testing.
The tyres are rigorously tested in both wet and dry conditions and given a rating. Unfortunately, there was no detailed description of the rating, or indication of whether a tyre was better in wet or dry, under acceleration or braking.

Here is a summary of the test results for the Boxster and Boxster S
205/50 ZR17 / 255/40 ZR17
Sports rating: Continental SportContact 2 N2
All round: Bridgestone S-02 A N4, Pirelli PZero rosso N3, Michelin Pilot Sport SX N2

225/40 ZR18 / 265/35 ZR18
Sports; Continental SportContact 2 N2; Michelin Pilot Sport SX N1; Pirelli PZero rosso N4
All round: Dunlop SP Sport 9090 N0; Yokohama AVS Sport N1

What is really interesting is that in the 17" size, the ONLY sport rated tyre is the new Conti. While there are three 18" inch tyres in this category.
Note that the N rating is the specific identification of a tyre variation developed specifically for Porsche. Please also note that only the exact tyre model and variation has been tested, for example, S-02 A N4. The N numbers on different tires say nothing about the quality; they are just a Porsche specific approval sign.

Anybody got any recommendations on a really hard wearing, economical tyre? If you' re not going to take your Box on track days and drive it within the law is there a hard compound tyre out there that' ll give you loadsa mileage for your $$$?

It is always an interesting debate about tyres. My Mich. Pilot Sports have done 12k now and I am in the market to get a little more life in the grip of the car, but which ones to go for?

The odd thing that struck me last week when I was in my local OPC having a good nose around, was that nearly all the boxsters in the show room had different tyres on. Mich. Pilot sports, Conti' s, P-Zeros and others, but I got to the point of getting bored looking at the tyres and started dribbling over shiney paintwork.

So as for someone looking for the best option when they renew tyres, if the OPC doesn' t make a definitive statement how on earth can we decide?

Reading old threads about tyres, I was thinking that I would opt for the P-Zero' s, but I think from all the views it will come down to best value for money on the day.

Where as JD power do surveys for vehicles, I don' t suppose PCGB have done one for tyres? It would be extremely useful.

Nic,

First, it was nice meeting you at the dinner at Eynsham Hall. Overall it was a great weekend for Harry and myself. Hope to meet all you guys and girls some time soon.

Anyway, Tyres >>> I have Pilot Sports that are performing very well but I am looking around to see if I should try another tyre when it is time to change. I notice that my tyres have what looks like a protective rim around the tyre wall. This seems to help protect the alloy rim from getting damaged in those dreaded kerbing incidents.

From your experience do any other maufaturers make tyres with this protective rim? I am interested in the Pirelli Rosso's but I have not seen any to compare. See pic attached of the rim I am talking about.
