I am looking at replacing the fronts on my 986S, the rears are Bridgestone S02's and have a few thousand miles left. The fronts are currently Michelin Pimacy. Should I replace fronts with S02's to match rear?

Other cheaper option is fit Continental SC2'sto front and match rears as soon as I can?

Bridgestones are directional and Continentals are isometric, which are more suited to the Boxster?

Personally, I'd put matching Bridgestones on. I used to swear by Michelins but my Spyder came supplied with Bridgestones. At 13500 miles they look about half worn if that. A pal with a Spyder just had to replace his rear Pirellis at 7500 miles! There is no discernible loss in performance for me, the car drives like it's on rails. Plus a little bit of OCD would be cured as they would match!
 
I'd also like to understand people's thoughts on this as I'm in a similar position. Fronts are currently matched to rears with Bridgestone SO2A's & fronts will need changing before long. Was thinking of Michelin Pilot Sport 2's - do they really need to match front & rear? My car is never tracked & I wouldn't say I drive it hard so probably wouldn't get to the tyres limits ....
 
I suppose what I am really asking is, will it handle better with directional tyres or isometric tyres or not really much difference. From what I can see Porsche dont seem to fit directional tyres, is this correct and is it anything to go by. Alan.
 
Up to 9/10s I suppose you'd never notice. You can mix front and rear but must keep the same on each axle. I personally would always keep all 4 matching but in reality that's more as a result of a bit of OCD on my part rather than any ability to shave a couple of tenths off my best lap at Oulton Park [:D]
 
I'd agree with Rob's comments Alan and always best to have four matching tyres if you can achieve it. You've only a few thousand left on the rears, so best to decide what tyres you want and purchase the fronts accordingly. If you go with any N-rated tyres then Porsche will have tested them to a level that you're very unlikely to approach in everyday driving, or even on track. Jeff
 
Thanks for the replies so far, I had a look at the rear SO2's yesterday after a club member suggested I check the tyre manufacture date. They were manufactured 27th week 2003. I bought the wheels second hand, they are 2003 facelift twinspokes, these could be original tyres. Anyway, I now think it's best I replace all 4, but with what brand? Mostly fast road and a handfull of Trackdays. I believe I should stick with N rated tyres, but which brand? Pricewise Conti SC2's cheapest, but are they as good as others? Thanks, Alan.
 
Serious answer this time.... At the age of your car I think you'll get little benefit from N-rated tyres. If you think about it, the tyres which are N-rated which come in your sizes were given that rating over a decade ago - Porsche no longer use these sizes anywhere so there's no need for the manufacturers to re-approve newer designs and compounds. Therefore by buying an N-rated tyre for an older car you are effectively paying a premium for what is now a substandard tyre compared to the newer offerings on the market (and tyre technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 years). I'd be looking at the prices of some of the newer breed of tyres, such as the Toyo Proxes (I put these on my Ferrari 360 and was very impressed) or if you want something stickier perhaps the kumho V70A....these (and others) are getting rave reviews and I'd imagine the prices are significantly better than some old n-rated tyre the manufacturer is still milking its money from...
 
Hi Greig, thanks, took your advice on the Linglong's, at £52:90 each incl.Delivery a no brained and they have a very similar tread pattern to SO2's. only problem is they don't list my rear size, but this won't be a problem as they will probably be worn out in 3 months along with my So2's. Alan.
 
Seriously, Greig which Toyo proxes? I can't find 255/40 in T1r's. I have found T1-Sport's, £495 delivered. Conti Sport Contact 2's are £512 delivered. Also Hankook V12 evo's £394 and Falken FK483's £376. I am running 17" wheels. Any thoughts on any of the above? Or any other recommendations? Thanks, Alan.
 
I think it was the T1-Rs....the T1-Sport are just an updated version of these....they get very good reviews. I'm not a fan of the sport contacts.
 
It's between Continental Sportcontact 3's at £468 or Toyo T1r's at £424. Anyone tried either of them? Alan.
 
4 new T1 Sports arrived today. £426. Now need to decide, do I fit them on original 'S' twists or facelift 'S' twinspokes. Hopefully get them fitted at weekend to see what they are like before RS day at Oulton. Alan.
