Tyres

I have recently tested a V6 and came away very inpressed indeed. At present I have a Disco and am keen to see some more of the new model before committing to the Cayenne.
A couple of questions on tyres if anyone can help please. How much are replacement tyres particularly in the big sizes, 19/20 inches and what sort of wear is expected from them. Will they be similar to my 996 ie about 12k from the rears and about 20k from the fronts?

thanks

Tim

the larger tyres seem to be wearing a bit quicker than that as i guess it a much heavier car than the 996.
mines brand new so as yet i can't answer these questions.

come along to Gaydon on July 25th (talk to Johnny Mcgirl 996 register for details) Porsche are doing a demo day for the cayenne. should be fun.

Thanks for the info Helen. The 20 inch wheels appear to be a very expensive option, circa £1750 for the wheels about £1,000 pa for tyres assuming an average 12k per year.

the new wheels come with the tyres fitted. we bought ours afterwards from a specialist (thanks to Elliot for the tip) much cheaper (much much cheaper)than from an OPC.

we are planing to put the 18" wheels back on for the bad weather in the winter, and if we should do any greenlane driving (unlikely)

There are great bargains out there at non OPCs.
I always keep my ears to the ground for them [;)]

Would you mind if I asked what sort of price you paid for the wheels and tyres. I assume, given that it is a brand new car, that they are genuine Porsche wheels with N rated tyres.

Tim I have the Cayenne S and was dumbstruck to discover I needed new tyres within 6,000 miles. However, this is heavy driving and the OPC in Hatfiled said they managed no more from their demo. I paid £155.00 per tyre for 285's not from an OPC.

Hope this helps as it is unlikely the salesman will tell you this when you give him the keys to your Disco!

Best wishes,

Giles

Thanks for that Giles. I do a pretty high mileage every year, circa 30k, and thought the Cayenne V6 would be good change. Running costs have been my concern although services are comparable with Land Rover, fuel consumption in the V6 I tried over 200 miles showed just over twenty so OK, insurance looks high group 20 , but tyre wear at that sort of rate becomes unacceptable. From your experience thats £1240 ay ear just to travel 12k miles. I think I'll have to wait and look at Disco 3.

regards

Tim

Looking at a tyre thread on another forum and it seems to be a mixed bag with regards to tyre wear but it sounds like you need new tyres at about 9000 miles..

it also sounds like alignment could be the of cause of problem..

Message: What tires do you have? I put on a set of Pirelli All Terrains with 2000 miles on the car. I am at 21,000 miles now and the tire are still fine.

guess it comes down to driving style, I had a cayenne s with steels as a loan car, and compared to mine with the same tyres on (pirelli p zero) the handling was far less confidence inspiring and I drove far slower...so presumably far less tyre wear. Now that I have M&S semi-off road tyres on I drive slower and even though they have 8,ooo miles on them the off-road tyres are barely worn. (I was down to tyre indicator bars on the rears at 10,000 with the P zeros).

I'm suprised the M&S type tyres are wearing as well as they seem to be. Was considering a 2nd set for next winter, what are you running?

I suppose driving style has a lot to do with it - I don't treat it as a 4x4 in the same way as I have the more agricultral of the species.

I have been running Hankook Ventus St 275/40/20 tyres on my Cayenne for nearly 2 years and they have been excellent.... Obviously not "N" or Porsche rated but fantastic reviews on www.rennlist.com

I've completed 20K with them fitted and still have 5mm tread on each tyre...

Very reasonably priced too at approximately £150 per tyre....

I'm running these too....nothing to complain about at all after 4 months..

Let us know what you go for

Be careful fitting anything that is not N rated as this will invalidate your warranty. Mine came with Michelin Latitude Sports which seem fine and no sidewall issues. I've got a set of winters from my old car ready to go on when the weather turns so that'll keep things ticking along nicely. Worth keeping an eye on ebay for a set of winter wheels and tyres.
