Tyres

Pot hole damage has brought an early death to one of my front tyres, nasty bulge on wall - only 12000 miles on them all since new.

Bought new Cayman S last April and it was shod with Goodyears - strange I thought and although nothing wrong with them, I have not felt totally at ease at times - past Boxsters had Pirelli but mainly Michelins, flirting with Bridgestone once, mistake there was to mix SO2s on rear with older Michelins on front, which messed with stability.

I was therefore enquiring what tyres other members have had fitted to their new Cayman S s ! - If I go like for like then simple choice just replace front 2, however if I am to change make will most probably change all 4 - but expensive option.

I was waiting to get to a Silverstone day and talk it through with Porsche there, but now no time as have to get it sorted.

I understand that Goodyear is a newly approved tyre for Porsche having the appropriate ratings, but I was wondering how often they were fitted to new cars.

Comments and experiences appreciated.

Cheers

John

I have not heard a bad thing about the Michelin tyres except the cost and perhaps the wear rate. You may also get a slightly biased opinion from Silverstone as I believe they have a relationship with Michelin.

Michelins all round for me and no issues so far. I find the road noise quite intrusive at times but thats probably down to the 19" size rather than the tyre itself but without switching to another brand I'll never know. Previous Boxster S had pirelli p zero's which were excellent when warmed up and seemed a little 'softer' but seemed to wear out that bit quicker! Not sure if this helps but I believe (~maybe naively) that Porsche have carried out 1000's of miles testing the car on certain tyres hence I'd rather stick with them rather than 'experiment'....

There's a new Michelin PS2 Sport which is coming, supposed to be almost as good as the PS Cup in the dry but better in the wet ... PSCups are pants in the wet --- even with deeper hand cut grooves ---

I normally use Michelins on the 19" bling wheels but the car is currently wearing Conti winter tyres on standard 18" wheels. I find the Contis a bit noisier and they have certainly produced one or two interesting moments, particularly when the temperature has warmed to 4 or 5 degrees C.

Thanks for your comments - I will contact Silverstone and await their comment too - shame I never got to put to a full test on a track - its just that I have yet to see a new Cayman with Goodyears - not that I have seen many close up and Porsche outlets just confirm that Goodyear is an approved tyre.
