Hi everyone ive just bought a 944 '89 2.7 lux. its great really happy with it, 95K immaculate in and out and full Porsche service.. but only had it two days and have a issue already!!!

last night i missed my turn and so reversed about 50m up the road. anyway later on in my journey i noticed a slight whine on acceleration and deacceleration not when maintaining speed though, this noise comes from rear of car (possible diff) and is in every gear. also when car is just coasting no noise...

Obviously im a little dissapointed but still love the car and was wondering if anyone could give me help on this issue??

Thanks again

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

Welcome to the forum, this is quite common with these cars to be honest, most whine to some extent and appently did even from new. If the whine is slight and only when accelerating I woudlnt worry about it, listen and see if if gets any worse.

Some peoples gearbox whine alot and they drive many miles in them, I had a whining gearbox but also a gear shift problem, recently swapped the gearbox for a s/h one when the clutch went, now I dont have a whine, but there is still a transmission noise.

Hi thanks for your quick response. yeah it is very slight and can only be heard when radio off and listening for it. Maybe it was always there but i wasnt listening for it? i guess the best thing to do is to monitor it to see if it gets worse. the guy i bought it off gave me receipts for a recon box about 30 thousand miles ago so shouldnt be that. Thanks again

My bet is it's the gearbox - but don't worry, they all do that to some extent. It will run for hundreds of thousands of miles like that.

Worth trying some new gearbox oil (remember to undo the fill plug first [;)]) 17mm allen head socket IIRC. The gearbox oil should be changed regularly.

I'd also say it is nothing to worry about. These boxes do whine (I quite like it actually) and will do so happily for many thousands of miles and many decades. I personally didn't notice any reduction when I replaced my gearbox oil though some have reported some reduction in noise - I guess it depends on how noisy it was to begin with. Ultimately when you've got a 3 foot long drive shaft spinning at engine RPM's connecting the engine to the gearbox you are never going to get a silent transmission. I believe it is called Character! The 911's have a character-full engine sound, our cars have a character-full transmission whine.

As the guys say - they all do it to a scertain extent. Changed my 160K + box (for a 112K one!) only because a bearing had gone 'cos of a bent trailing arm and I wasn't sure of any internal damage and I picked it up for £75!

Enjoy your car and join the club both are great.
