Ultimate Turbocharger

I was reading with interest that the new 997 Turbo will be fitted with turbo's with variable compressor inlet vanes to enable the turbo to be optimised accross the whole rev range giving nice smooth lag free boost. How long till something like this will be available for retrofit on our 944's?

So like the one in my 530d, then (among many diesels). I'm not exactly sure what controls it; I assume the EMS, but even my Autronic doesn't have variable turbo vane control. I guess maybe it could be made to work from the variable cam timing bit of the software... [&:]

Didn't realize Fen had bought the Beemer as a donar car for his track slag! Next time we see it he'll have swapped over those donut sytle headlights and the shark fin antenna.

I'm going to use to use it to make one of those 944 Estate things that was posted recently. [:D]

Ooooh, so that means bolt-on...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It will take a while before a retro-fit suitable for the 944T is around I imagine. By that time I might have a V8 shoehorned in there [;)][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Boost read by a "Powertrain Contol Module" according to the second link. Sounds like EMS to me.

Yes, Control looks much like a wastegate really so it could be electronically controlled but a reliaboost or similar should also work. EMS controlling a solonoid would probably be the ultimate.

Variable vane Turbos have been around for a short while in diesel cars but not in petrol because of the extreme heat that the petrol cars generate in the exhaust. I think the Porsche one will be the first for a petrol Turbo.

I hope the 997 is comfortably over 500bhp [:D]

Fen - I think you would be very board with a V8 in your 944. What would you do with all that spare time that you would normally spend fiddling with EMS parameters?

I haven't played with it for a good few months now, but if I do go V8 the Autronic will still be in the passenger footwell. I'll need something to manage the V8's sparks and boost after all [;)]
