Under body protection

Just looking for some feedback. With winter not that far away I was thinking of getting the underside of the 996 protected against the worst of the winter elements. Has anyone done similar and if so any recommendations of where to get the work done? Cheers

Up until 2006, OPC service centres used to add that free after a service. Well, my was always in Autumn so maybe that is why... They don't offer that anymore, not even as a paid option (they told me, the cars don't need it...)

You should be able to buy the spray can and ramp up the car to spray?

Warning the car will smell (outside) for the first 1 or 2 journeys...

as above, in theory the car doesnt need it, however I have used this stuff on other cars:
0274_hammerite_under_body_seal.jpg

and it couldn't be easier to apply - just get under the car and spray onto any exposed metal parts (you won't find many with the undertrays)...you should be done in 10 mins, alternatively I'm sure any garage would be happy to do it - its really the simplest of jobs...just don't get it all over the radiators...

I have a large tin of that Hammerite stuff, only of the paint on variety. Had it for donkeys years, and it's still good, sploshed some on the underside of my old Mazda recently, good stuff. Like Greig though, I wouldn't have thought a relatively new Porsche would have desperately needed it though.

Cheers guys.

The car doesn't really need to much, there are just some areas where the under seal has split so I want to get it re-sealed before it does become a problem. I have noticed the the main areas effected are the jacking points which I asume is due to them protruding and being in the line of fire debris from the wheels?

I'm going to take it to a paint shop on Saturday morning to get a quote for taking care of the underside but I'm also going to get the front wings looked at, as although I'm being fussy, there are the first signs of corrosion coming through[8|]. I suppose you have to expect these things as the car is almost 15 years old!

Once I've taken the starter motor off and hopefully get away with just a clean down and lubrication, refurbished the wheels and fixed the chips on the windscreen I'll have a great car or so I keep telling my wife.[:D]

Been to Stevie Walker in Bathgate yesterday things didn't seem too bad until the car was put up on the ramp. Corrosion is well on the road to gaining a grip on the underside of the sills, front wings and a few mirco bubbles are starting to show on the lower outer sills.

I'm going to have to get the work done asap, however would I be better to find a classic car restorer to get the work done or stick with a conventional body shop? Also does anyone have any recommendations for a central belt based company as I would like to get a couple of quotes/opinions? Ta

Would steve walker not do the work? I find him to be very competitive....will be at his tomorrow for some work on one of my fleet

Indeed I have an estimate from Steve, he did a good job of rebuilding my last lotus a few years ago hence the reason for contacting him in the first place. I was going to call him tomorrow to discuss a full respray but equally I want to get a couple of competitive quotes.

I'd go with Steve if I were you. I really rate him for doing bodywork on Porsches. Had my boxster done in there and it was a good job.
