Under seal

I know that the 964 RS as no under seal applied and I just wonderd how that effects the use of the car through the winter months when the roads are covered in salt.I dont want to leave the car standing in the garage over the winter because I want to drive it, how many of you use your car in all weathers and how is the under body standing up to this.Sense dictates that it should be power washed underneath after a run in the wet when salt is on the road, any tips anyone.

dont know if the RS as plastic under trays, which would help.
 
Hi Dick,
With no underseal from the fcatory Porsche cut the body work guarantee from 10 to 3 years.
The steell was still all galanised etc but no undereal on top, just plain paint.

I wash my car pretty much after every use and leave the under tray on. Some people suggest removing it for better cooling, opinions on pros vs cons differ.
 
For year round use would it be an option to get it up on ramps, give it a really good clean underneath, let it dry thoroughly, then Wayoxl the entire underside to give it some protection?

Anyway, would it be acceptable for Dick to 'Clear Waxoyl' the underside of his car if he's concerned about salt in the Winter?

I know it would add a certain amount of weight (probably a kg or two), but only the same as installing a fire extinguisher to protect your pride and joy.
 
Well worth getting underneath the car and having a look. My GT3 had the paint flake off some of the welds and Reading kindly agreed to clean the welds with emery and then put some joint sealer on. After letting it dry I've now covered with an enamel paint but it's too early to know whether it'll stop them rusting again.

When I got my car earlier this year I took all the under panels off, engine/gearbox cover, transmission tunnel and front suspension, cleaned the whole of the under body, cleaned up all the spot welds, added anti rust paint, paint and then waxoyled everywhere (this was done using a ramp and air gun).

My car was in good condition before the above was undertaken (other RSs I've looked at were less good). The lack of underseal when new is, in my opinion, now beginning to take its toll on our cars. I also run wheel arch liners on the rear (taken from a 993 and adapted), as standard the cars have none. Why do I do this, well you'll find the the rear wings will start to rust if you don't (have a look at a car that car done plenty of track days if you don't believe me).

Once you've done the above, a annual inspection (a bit of cleaning up and anti rust paint) and waxoyl should do the trick. I use my car in all weather and will run it through the winter. I am not a fan of washing a car off and then leaving it in the garage, you're better off washing and then taking it for a run.

Previous owner of my car had a thin layer of underseal put on my RS. If your car is in good condition then it may be worthwhile getting it put on but others may not like the idea of the RS with underseal. Take a before and after photo if you are going to do this so that when you sell your car the prospective buyer will know you are not hiding anything (I do not know what condition mine was in but the car overall looked good and the previous owner washed it with distilled water!).

Underseal (or more correctly body sealer, which is applied before the final colour paint) is applied to absorb the impact of stones and gravel so that the paint surface is not broken, Lack of body sealer means that gravel can more easily chip the paint, and untreated chips allow corrosion that even galvanising cannot prevent over an extended period. Waxoyl will not prevent the original damage but is good at preventing contact between salt and the bare metal. An alternative to the original seal woul be stonechip that can be applied over the orginal paint and could then be oversprayed with colour. Stonechip will give less protection than sealer, but is easier to apply and repair with a local "squirt". Regular underbody cleaning, local repair, and waxoyl is the simplest solution. Stonechipping the arch areas would be my next move.
 
I´d never drive my car (90 Cup, no underseal) in salt, I´ve seen the damage done to other cars. It´s not only the body, also the alloy and other parts will have a lot of corrosion. So, I enjoy dry winter days and keep it home when there´s salt.

I saw the thread title and wondered how you got a car under a seal. Then, I realised it was about underseal.
 
Some 964RS were undersealed at the factory as a special request for the German domestic Market, I looked at a Rubystone car about 7 years ago which was undersealed. Not sure but think a few RHD cars came over with underseal particularly the Touring version.
 
Just remebered S man one of theUK undersealed cars was a very close relative to ur red car ............cud be catching Mate
