Uneven tyre wear

Hi all,

I have a 2003 C4S and have recently noticed uneven tyre wear at the front (inner edges), I assume this may mean i need the tracking/geometry checking - any other thoughts on what this could be?

Thanks!

Justin

You need to get the alignment checked - either toe-out or too much negative camber. You could try Peter Tognola at Datchet as he is just down the road from you. He did my 993 and it made a significant difference to the handling. I recently had the same problem on the rears of my C2, and it was too much negative.

Funny how they always seem to scrub out on the inside. I don't recall having tyres wear the outside edges first - not since my Mini days, anyway.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, the car is/should be set as standard (i.e. road, rather than track) - thanks also for the advice, I did use Peter a few years ago for a Boxster and he was very good - will give him a try!

I guess it's not unusual for the alignment to get out of shape, bearing in mind all the speed bumps around here!

Thanks again,

Justin

My C4S had significant wear to the inside edges as well. I am pretty sure the alignment was correct (but I may be wrong).

When I traded it in, the dealer specifically looked at the inside edges. I believe they wear the inside edges more quickly due the standard setup with a some camber.
If you throw it around corners a lot, I think the wear would be reasonably even, but I do lots of A-road/motorway miles, so they don't get the edges scrubbed that much.

The inside was below the legal limit, the outside had about 3mm.

It's normal for the front tyres to wear more on the inside edge rather than outside, due to toe in settings (helps tame that tail) particularly on the 4Wd wider tracked C4S & Turbo. Having said this if there is a vast difference between inner & outer you may need your geometry checking, but if the car is handling ok it's probably not worth it as the £200 odd quid involved (at an OPC) would nearly buy the new front tyres!!!
