Replacing the knee protector rail over the weekend and found the following identification marking - non of which relates to the chassis or other usual markings. Any ideas?

The "secret" build number. That is the code that provides Porsche AG with all the details of your vehicle, such as VIN, engine and gearbox codes, Option codes etc etc.

HTH,

Bert

Thanks Bert, Interesting indeed. Makes you wonder what else is 'hidden'.

Don't suppose there is a way of translating all that into those meaningful codes then? Any tool/lookup that this could be queried against?

Marcus

No, sadly no online tools available: this is a porsche-only number.

In the olden days, (1960-ties) that number was the VIN number. Then it was changed to a "build" number which was cross referenced with a file when the car was build at the factory.

HTH,

Bert

One would think then that if I provided this build number to an OPC it may/would speed up any request for a Certificate of Authentication (and arguably be more data accurate)...

Cheers

They can confirm for you that the build number matches the chassis number and the car hasn't been reshelled though.

Ian.

Thanks Ian, worth remembering. You never know these days I guess. As values and prices increase, the risk of seeing previously damaged cars making back on the road for sale increases too...

That is an early shell no that falls right in the middle of the LS series cup shells. I take it it is a 1990 with LS VIN?

Sounds like a definite probability - thanks.

Last chassis numbers are a '90 LS404105. So the shell was a few months or so ahead of the chassis production? What do you also mean by "cup shells"?

Cheers

Cups are the race cars with shells taken from the C2/4 production line to Weissach for cage fitting etc.

Most of the Cups were registered with ONS in March 1990 so your shell is prior to this date.

Check your inner engine lid as it will carry the same shell no. Doors also have the same no.

Great for telling if your car is a reshell. Not so easy breaking the news to the proud owners!
