Unknown squeal / howl on start up?

Hi...

I hope someone can help me... I own a 996 '01, with just 29K, and full FPSH... It hasn't been driven for a few weeks, and a couple of times today as I fired it up... the engine gave out a squeal, or howl noise... it sounded like a (dry) belt slip... or maybe an alternator bearing??? I'm just guessing, but it disapeared after a second, and the engine sounded, run and ticked over fine... can anyone shed any light on this???

Many thanks

Chris

I had this happen to my car not long ago. The water pump gasket collapsed, slightly disloging the 'V-belt' which squealed as the engine was running.....eventually the 'V-belt' came off the pulleys (alternator, water pump and a/c) and subsequently coolant was no longer being pumped around the car and it quickly overheated. I had it towed away and all was replaced under warranty.

Be careful.[:-]

Thanks for all the replies guys....

Rodney, the squeal only occurred for a second whilst it started then it immediately stopped... there is not continual squeal whilst the engine is running.

Hmmm, I'd best keep an eye on it...

Chris,

Mine starting squealing on start-up, but then after a while became constant.....I had a look at the belt at the time and it looked normal and in position......but I did notice a lot of coolant leaking....I originally thought it was a cracked header tank (common) but it was actually the water pump gasket that failed.

You should definately have it seen-to in any case, if the 'V-belt' snaps while you are driving, the engine will overheat in seconds, and may not give you time to drive anywhere convenient. It's not an expensive fix either (assuming it is the 'V-belt' which it might not be )

Good luck

(DRUM ROLL)............!

.....starter motor! not bad news.... not good news.... i'll settle with this though [;)]
