Unleaded Conversion

I am already finding it hard to find many garages with LRP. Tesco's seems to be the best place at the moment.

Has anybody attempted to or know how and where to get a conversion to Unleaded? Does this effect performance / Does it have side effects?

Thanks

Hi Richie,

As far as I am aware (Will probably be corrected now though) The 911 SC was capable of running on unleaded from new, I ran mine on normal unleaded when I first bought it but after various posts on here about how much better the cars can run on Shell Optimax I now run it on that, and it runs fine with much better idling and slightly better fuel consumption (only slightly) How the performance is affected compared with leaded fuel/LRP? I don't know, someone else with probably answer with that.

Octane rating:-

I used to run my SC on 2* star petrol, as that was what it said in the book, which equates to not higher than 95 octane (ordinary unleaded) - used to really bother people at the petrol stations, as they thought that I was deranged !
The engine soldiered on for ever, it seemed.

Lead:-

The engine should already not need lead to lubricate the valves, as the Americans were using unleaded years before we started.

High guys,

Thank you for your replies. Mine is a 1981, so Dan if yo are running yours on Optimax and its an 80, i theory, I should be OK........?

Is there an official line on this? Last thing I want is another bill!

Thanks again.

Richie

Hi,
I have a copy of a Porsche Technical Bulletin dated 25/05/99 number 08/99 titled Porsche Cars GB ltd Unleaded fuel Survey. It lists all the cars from the 356 made up to 1999 and the fuel type required and acceptable. for the 2.7 and SC i.e 911 from '72 to '80 the required grade is 95 (RON) and acceptable is also 95. For the '81- '84 SC the required is98 (used to be called super unleaded) and the acceptable is 95.

So your car should run fine on the unleaded from any where. A fuel expert once warned me about filling up with the cheaper "super market" petrols as they had higher sulpher levels and may not be as clean as the branded petrol but he did work for Shell. I think they are all now selling low sulpher petrol.

If you want a copy of the fax let me know.

Rats

Funny thing is in my '78SCs owners manual it states the required minimum grade is 91 RON ! Maybe the Technical Bulletin figure is a 'coverall' rating.

Nice to know that I am doing something right for a change!
I believe that Optimax is basically a better version of super unleaded fuel anyway, and its easy to get hold of. I think BP now do an Optimax equivalent? (Not sure what its called though)

A mechanic/family friend I know has always advised my family not to use Supermarket petrol for the same reasons as rattys has listed - not sure if its true but I always try to use Shell fuel for all my cars (I have also Golf TDi which seems to run better on Shell diesel than any of the other manufacturers)
