Unusual 'beeping noise - any ideas?

Hi

Yesterday evening I started the car (MY01 facelift 996) and drove for about 20 mins and the temp varied between -3.5 and 0. However, I could hear quite a quiet beep every now and then. It was not at a constant rate (i.e. every 10 seconds etc), but was sporadic. The beep was very quiet and if I had of had teh radio on, it would have been heard. Then after a while it stopped. Whilst it was still sounding I checked the oil pressure and eng temp and both seemed fine. This morning I drove again for the same time at around -4.5 and no sound!

Does anyone know what this beep could have been, as there is nothing in the manual?

Many thanks

It couldn't by any chance be the speed warning on the OBC? I heard of a guy in the US who set it by accident and it drove him mad for weeks.

Have you tried toggling on the OBC selector for '!Check' to see if there are any warnings stored to indicate problems?
Something may have come up but no sign on the dash was given.

Clutching at straws here....is your fuel gauge stable? If the fuel sender has become entangled you may get sudden low fuel warnings, then it may untanlge itself and everything seems fine?

Nope, none of those!!! I did think about an ice warning, but there is no mention in the manual. Also the fact that it was very quiet seemed strange. I am baffled really.
My friend who was in the car with me weighs around 18st and he commented that it may be a fat b*****d warning. Has anyone heard of some sort of weight/weight distribution alarm? It's a long shot, but in the absence of anything else, you never know!

The plot thickens.....

Hi, I think you will find as already said it is a low temp warning I had it on my o3 996 and anything below I think 2 to3 deg it gave a warning.

Hi Dazzler,
Had this problem with a Mercedes, after much investigation it proved to be a fault with the switch which warned that you were driving with the handbrake on. Only happened sporadically when the car was in motion over slightly rough road surfaces causing almost imperceptable vibration. Good luck with the diagnosis it neally drove me mad (madder !! ?)
