Unwanted Noise from engine area?

I hope that someone out there might be able to help me!

I have a 2005 mdel year 996 C4S and until now it has proved most reliable.

A couple of weeks ago whilst driving with the windows down, I heard a noise coming from the engine area that sounded a little like a slipping belt (a light squealling).

This noise has now happened a couple of times since. My local dealer took the car in to have a look, but typically, the car behaved impeccably whilst it was in and made no noises at all.

The noise seems to only happen for a couple of seconds and mostly when the car is pulling away (when the engine has been warm and has recently been re-started). Which is embarrasing to say the least, as it sounds even worse from the pavement.

I have booked the car back in to my Porsche centre, but they have said that unless they know what to look for (or hear the noise themselves) they cannot begin to fix the problem.

Has anyone had a simular problem and if so how was it dealt with?

The car is still under the manufactures warranty.
 
It could be that it's a noise from the clutch. I get a 'squeel' sometimes when the engine is hot and I've been stop-starting. (London traffic)

Something that doesn't happen a lot, but pretty reliably if in London, or the M25, or the A2, or M20, or any darn UK road !


 
I agree with Richard, it happened to my car as well. It was the 'V-belt' or polyrib belt. Get it seen to sooner rather than later as if it slips off, you will lose power steering, and cooling to the engine (among other things).
 
Hi Dillon. I'm not sure whether this is any help to you but I also get a squeal from my polyrib belt - just ater I've washed the car. This never happens on any other occasion, so I'm not sure if it's the same thing as you have. If it is the polyrib then it could be that your tensioner is not as it should be or that you have oil on the belt itself? Mine almost certainly does it because it is wet. Adrian.
 
Hi,

I dont think it is the clutch, as I have had the car for eighteen months and have never had such a noise before (I do a lot of City driving). Further to this, I am sure the clutch wasnt 'engaged' when the noise appears.

Also the car was serviced (major) about two months ago and the clutch was fine.

But it is an interesting point. Thank you.
 
With the 'Polyrib Belt' would this have been covered when the dealer 'tightened' the belts when it went in?

The noise continued after they had tighted the belts, so I presume that the belt that your refering to is different?

Also, if this belt is slipping and drives the auxiliaries, should this be changed on the cars Porsche warranty?

The belt cannot be "tightened". It has an automatic spring tensioner. The Minor service does not include a check on the belt, but the Major service includes the removal and checking of the belt.

What tends to happen is that the rib surfaces tend to glaze, and the grip is reduced resulting in slippage and squealing. The belt is only £20.09, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to cahnge, so it might be worth considering getting that done.
