Update on the 2.7 vs 3.2 debate

Just thought I'd share my views as this issue has cropped up in a number of guises recently. I had an all day loan of a '07 2.7 Tip on Saturday and did about 180 miles on roads I know well. Was able to put foot down a bit when traffic permitted.and did lots of opportunistic overtaking. There is no doubt the 3.2 has more grunt mid range, both in terms of power and noise. Allowing for the Tip (and I used the buttons quite a bit) I think I would miss my 3.2 manual. I don't think I could go back to 5 gears. But for those without experioence of either, the difference is I suspect marginal and ultimatly, wholly a subjective issue

I was lucky enough to be invited on one of the Porsche Boxster driving days a couple of months back at the MIRA test centre near Leicester.

When you get the chance to drive a Boxster and a Boxster "S" back to back on a track, where you can push them hard, the difference is even more pronounced. It's not just the extra mid-range grunt and noise that's apparent with the "S", the suspension and brakes are much better too.

Both the cars I drove were manual, so I can't really comment on the Tiptronic 'box.

I own the 2.7 Tip and possibly agree in the mid sector the 3.2 might have the edge but for an extra £4k not sure.
Where you will find the 3.2 in manual is on a track ,that is the only draw back on the Tip when kick down comes in can be a bit unnervy I am lazy and leave in drive on less thing to worry about

a 3.2 tip is similar performance to a 2.7 manual so comparing a 2.7 tip to a 3.2 manual is a bit unfair.

I did the Boxster experience at Llandow recently, and went quicker in a 2.7 manual with 18s and stock suspension than a 3.4 tip with 19s and PASM. Admittedly Llandow is bumpy and harder riding cars suffer under heavy braking, but i was 4-5mph faster peak speed on front and back straights :D

When you get to my age arriving a bit later is not a problem [:D][:D] you youngsters are always in a hurray .

With the smaller wheels 17" it is a softer ride ,found my 550 with 18" on certain surfaces a bit harsh

interesting......i could feel huge difference in 2.7 man vs 3.4 tip and sure enough the tip was significantly faster.i have done several tracks in manuals and tips so maybe am more used to getting the most out of the tip[:D]

Had a new 2.7 Cayman for the day whilst my 3.2 Boxster ('01) was being serviced. Was hugely dissapointed. Not only with the apparent lack of power, but it felt anonymous, sitting on hard seats and looking at a not very interesting dash and without the S's engine/induction noise and 6 gears. I hate to say it but it didn't feel special enough.

Now I expect the 3.4S might excite a bit and lift the whole experience, but I was really please to get my car back and blat home in it. It's great when you love it all over again!

I had the opposite. A 3.4s on loan while my 2004 2.7 was in the opc. Like you, the 987 was like sitting in any other car with its shiny dashboard. The car was quite a bit quicker but I did prefer my 986. the car makes you feel like you are in a sports car, even if you are only tootling down to the shops.

This post is more a comparison between the 986 and 987.

Interesting that todays 2.7 is just 7 BHP short of the original 3.2 while todays 3.4 has 75 BHP more than the original 2.7.

When we test drove the new 3.4 versus our 3.2 ... paper spec said - just a little change in BHP :) .......why bother said I

test car was 400 miles old .. but hit 4000 revs in it coming out of a roundabout - massive differance to the 3.2... we changed :)
