Update Radio

I have a 1997 993 with the original Porsche radio. I would really like to update by putting in a new digital radio/bluetooth etc. Has anyone done this, and are there any recommendations as to which model/supplier etc?
Nick

I have.

The original Porsche CD player in my 993 started misbehaving, so I replaced it with a 'retro-look' Porsche CD/DVD/GPS/Bluetooth unit designed specifically for this model.

To be honest, I wish I had my old unit back and working -
- I don't watch DVDs (not in the car, anyway).
- The GPS screen is too small to see, certainly while driving, and my iPhone Google Maps does a great job. The Google Maps are regularly updated for free - Porsche charge a fortune for map updates (if you can find one) and you can't enter full postcodes.
- I don't like talking to people who aren't in the car with me (via hands-free mobile) when I'm driving.

I do listen to music and talk-shows while driving - so all I want is a radio and CD player - which I once had :(

I just want to drive with as few distractions as possible.

I suggest you think it over :)

Nick I bought my 993 C2 with a horrible CD/radio that was well past its best. I did look at the Porsche 'retro-look' unit but it's crazy expensive and (as Matthewb says) does lot of things I didn't really want or need. For me the requirement was a decent DAB radio, Aux input and bluetooth for an iPhone. A friend recommended the Continental unit - specifically the: Continental 12V Radio RDS USB MP3 WMA Bluetooth Orange Backlight. It's suitably retro-looking and does everything I needed brilliantly. (It's available with blue or orange lighting - obviously the orange works best in the 993). I think it's only available in Germany but I managed to buy it through Amazon UK for £102 (!) Easy to fit - the only additional fiddly bit is you need to add the DAB aerial (if you want DAB reception) which sticks onto the inside of the windscreen. A quick look on Amazon suggests they have one left! Buy now while stocks last....

Second the Continental. Installing one in my 87 3.2, I did a test fit last night and it looks right and doesn't sound bad either.
The Continental model has Orange illumination and there is an identical VDO model that has blue. As these head units are aimed at the truck market make sure you order the 12v not the 24v versions.

This is the Continental model installed in a 993. Model no. is TR7412UB-OR. There also a model with a single CD player built in.

Tore B supplies the Continental unit for the 993, he also supplies a Porsche decal to cover the Continental branding. Depending on how your car is wired you have to swap the permeant/switched live wire or purchase the adaptor block.

Thank you Matthew, that is good information, I have some other posts as well, so as I am new to all this, it is comforting to know that there is so much experience out there to call on.!

If you do decide to change units more than happy to make you an offer for your original unit, mine is pretty marginal and lets a brilliant car down, cheers Steve
