Updateing PCM

Just got a 'back up copy' to update my PCM and despite the unit playing CD's ok it won't pick up the update CD. Is there something I'm doing wrong!
997 05 PCM 2.1

If your original DVD map data disc is the 2004/5 version you will need a firmware update first to accept later map data discs. Press MAIN and TRIP buttons simultaneously on PCM unit to discover current firmware version.

Yeh, thanks Geoff997, been and done this, and need to update from A to B, but the disc doesnt seem to be recognised by the PCM, should only need to put disc in to start the process.

Are you saying the disc you have has the firmware update on it or you have already installed update? When I did my previous car (2005 997S) the firmware update was on several (at least 2) CD discs, which had to be installed in the correct order (PCM front slot) before a new map DVD would be recognised (DVD drive bay in luggage compartment). Those discs had updates for Bose, phone and DVD map drive. The CD player can't recognise DVD's so I'm assuming the disc you have is map data DVD. Put the disc you have in a PC and check file types on it. If all the files have extension .db it's probably map only.

Ok, I've had a dig around in my office and found the discs I used for the update. There are 2 CD's with lots of folders and strange file extensions and 1 DVD with the map data, which was dated 08-2007 plus install instructions. That car now belongs to a friend who has subsequently installed a new DVD 2015 map data this year, which was read and accepted with no problems.

The PCM is known for not liking some CD media which has been disc copied from an original. Even some home copied CD music may not be recognised and play. Mine are copy discs but they were recognised immediately by the PCM and the update started automatically. The following is a stupid question but..... you do have the ignition switched on? And if no battery charger connected the engine will need to be running.

I have tie update instructions that I have used to update both my cars with PCM 2.1. You do have to follow the update sequence of the firmware and once you update from one firmware to the next, the previous map disc won't usually work. I think the update from version A to B was a critical update and neither of my cars had version A when I started the update process.
I can't seem to be able to upload the pdf file here so send me a pm with your email if you would like it.

Here is the update instructions:

:Timbo,

I saw your pm.... Just down load the update .iso files again and use Windows to burn to DVD. As Geoff997 said you need to use the correct type of DVD disc and then it will work.

That actual firmware updates are small files, the map discs are very big, so only download the 2015 map version and insert after all firmware updates are finished.

Hi I am about to buy a new Pioneer PCM replacement for my 2006 C4S, I have looked at a few of them and have decided to go for the 7" screen, DAB, Bluetooth, built in Sat Nav and Apple play, does anybody have any advice, pro's, cons before I go ahead on 4th October? Thanks Jules

Hi Geoff many thanks, yes I had already mentioned that, I checked that they can do the work on the fibre cables, get the correct conversion kit AND ensure that there are no scuffs or marks to the interior that appear during the exchange of the two units.

I'll let you know how I get on...

Hi,
If anyone is interested I have a copy of the update disc's purchased from climarepair.com for PCM 2.1 which I have not used because I have decided to swap the PCM for a new nonstandard unit.
I am assured that the updates will work and the procedure from their website which I have printed out is quite straightforward.
The PCM has to be updated first to SW version 3 and then the nav software and finally the new maps. If interested make me an offer 1 Paid £32.65 so would accept an offer around half price The package includes the 2016 maps.

You can find details of this in the 997 Register Technical section. Look in the Index under "7 digit postcodes".
