UPGRADE REAR SPEAKERS OR NOT?

I have upgrade front speakers fitted in my 944 and wonder weather it is worth the hasstle of removing rear quarter windows to fit upgrade rears or not.[8|]
I currently have additional rear speakers fitted in the boot in each rear corner at the rear panel end.(temporay job)
Is it possible to fit bigger size speakers in the rear quarter panel trims or do I have to have the same sizes as the front ones?
Has anybody experienced doing this job?
cheers!
Alan

Fitting new rear speakers is fairly easy, there was a guide floating about Titanic on how to do it a few years ago. You don't need to remove the rear windows at all. The room in there is cramped though so I doubt you'll be able to squeeze bigger speakers in.

you just need to remove the rear panels if i remember 5 screws and the rear seat catches and all is very straight forward they will come out without removing the rear windows just prise the bubber up and carefully pull out they are glued in but honest if ur carefull np easier than the fronts were to make look good i would get somthing a bit bigger tbh if i were doing it again which i think i will in the summer not to sure how to go about it though so have some thinking time

i suppose should be glad realy if it was too loud i wouldnt be able to hear the creaking dash noisey sun roof and squeaky door panels

Whoop, whoop, whoop "Thread Hijack Reversing"[:D]

Which make, model of speaker is suitable for the front speaker upgrade - ie slim enough to fit into the existing aperture and not have the magnet hit any of the door inards?

hi all i have just do this job on the weekend, i uprated them to the jbl 6 x4
the rear ones you can fit in with out the need to remove the rear windows just the door seal the two screws in the panel and the seat pin, under the panel you can see the speaker held in by 4 screws undo these and replace the speaker and do the job in reverse, note the hole for the speaker is only big enough for the 6 x 4 speaker.
in the front i also put the jbl 6 x 4 in they fit if you remove the adaptor plate the speakers come with the is also a spacer ring around the top of the speaker and you remove that as well this then fits in the front and you can still use the porsche grill.

that was my weekend !!!![:)]

I thought you could fit a round 6" driver in but you'd need a different mounting plate, the body certainly has a large enough opening there.

peter whats this mounting plate mate i have tried various with no joy but 6inc round in the rear would be nice

Here's the best pics I can manage at the moment, this shows the size of the opening when the mounting plate is removed

And this one shows the back of the speaker and its mounting plate (hopefully not a view that many people will ever see!). The plate is the black part, I assume you can still order the round 6" cut version from Porsche.

Nick,

Cococola (Alan) sent me a couple of pictures on the upgraded speakers and how he had fitted them behind the door cards so that the grille fitted flush. JBL speakers. I know this was one a pre-oval car so I don't know what difference there is with the door cards.
You will have to ask Alan which JBL speakers they are as they are different to the ones I have. (Also what the sound quality is like).

Cheers,

There are two types of JBL speaker for 944.The ones without the tweeter (these are 120 watts, and the ones with the tweeter at 150 watts.I fitted the earlier ones first which werent bad but then went for the 150 watts which are much improved.
It looks like I might be able to fit 6 inch round rear speakers in the rears if I have a support plate on the rear quarter trim panel, screwing the speaker onto the quarter trim perhaps as there seems to be enough gap on the inner quarter panel if going by the photos?[8|]

Removed the rear quarter trims today and the space to fit the speaker is only suitable for a 6x4 size so I have upgraded the rears to some more JBL speakers and the sound is great![8D]
