Upgrade - turbo, CaymanS or 997S?

Hi,

I've had my 996 C2 for a year now and it's been superb, although I've had a few niggles it's been a terrific drive and if I go even 3-4 days of not having a good drive in it I get withdrawal symptoms :)

Because it's been so good I've been considering upgrading but there's lots to consider:-

996 turbo - I hear lots good about it but I must admit I'd like to go for something newer, how good is it?
997 C2S - had a test drive in this and it was superb, felt better in every way apart from one- not entirely convinced about the engine noise, too smooth?
CaymanS - had a test drive in this but although it was extremely good I think I would always regret not having the faster 911.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Alex

i think you are right to go with the more up to date 997/987 models-great tho the 996TT is ,the newer model is worth going for (imho).having had a 996 i have to say that i dont notice any difference in speed moving to the cayman s -if a racing driver then i probably would but the way i drive(not at 10/10ths) its not discernible in everyday,or in my experience even in reasonable track days.that said-ihave driven the 997c2s a fair bit too and it is a super car.and there are bargains at the moment.cayman has a lot more usable luggage space,c2s is a bit faster, but they are both up to date inside and out and i suspect you`d enjoy both[:D]
as always try both for a decent drive and find which one appeals more-viz handling speed use etc
good luck

seems to me you have answered your own question already - you want a 997 C2S... with PSE fitted.

The way prices of 997s are dropping its got to be a great time to move up to one - haggle hard as the forecourt prices still aren't reflecting the silly money they are changing hands for behind the scenes in the trade. Yes your 996 will have lost a shedload too, unless you bought it for a steal. Thats car ownership for you [] !

mmm... Had a 03 996TT, for 18 months or so,, then sold it [:(],, about 8 months ago,, and bought a 07 Cayman S, that lasted a week,, not impressed whatsoever,, [] Guess what i bough today !! another 996 TT,
Unless you want/need the extra power of the turbo,, go for a 997

If you've got your heart set on a 997 then buy a 997 and don't take a 996TT for a test drive because you'll want one. I've been a passenger in a mates car and it is just simply mindblowing. I've also followed it in my car and it is simply astonishing the speed it can pull away from 60mph plus - and my car is no slouch, but the 996TT just left me as if I was stationary. Guess whats on my 'next Porsche to buy' list, and I wouldn't care if it was the last Porsche I own, and at their current depreciating prices they are just about the best car bargain you'll ever see. The 997TT may be a better car but I can't imagine many of us are good enough drivers to exploit or even notice the difference.

not surprised you noticed a difference from the 996TT to cayman s[:D]

on the plus side i have found the handling of the cs outweighed the extra straight line licencebusting speed of the TT in everyday driving, but as a special experience i would have to say that the 997TT with chrono is unmatchable and definately my next porsche dream.the 996 would just be going backwards in development terms just for straight speed, but guess we all have different needs/wants[:D]

Hi dylan ,, If the above, was in a reply to my findings,,,??
Nothing to do with the TT performance gain over the Cayman,, maybe i had a poor one ??, but worlds apart, Poor trim quality, cheap and tacky interior in comparison,, harsh on the road,, No contest between a 3/4 year old TT to a newer Cayman for the same money
But everyone to their own

having just come back from the cayman weekend trip to wales -8 cars owned by mainly diehard prosche owners!i suspect you were just unlucky with yours !!no complaints about any of the issues you raised with regard to poor trim etc etc.everyone very happy with their caymans [:D](and some had had some pretty impressive porsche histories!!

I'll have to have a drive in the turbo 996 & 997 and then I'll have driven pretty much everything, not sure what the Porsche dealer will think of me though :) Just on the noise issue, have any of you guys noticed the 997 noise to be quieter/smoother/less aggressive than the 996?

personally,nope[:D]

I've just gone "backwards" from a Cayman S to a 996. The appeal of the new interior wears off after a while IMO, it looks nicer but as mentioned the quality isn't that great. I realised after 6 months with the Cayman that owning something from the latest line up wasn't as important to me as owning something a little bit more special - so I traded into a GT2 [:D]

To the original poster, I'd go for a nice 996 TT out of those based on my experience.

Cheers,
Gavin

hasnt worn off in nearly 2yrs for me[:D]
still love it to bits and the twisty country bits keep me smiling.each to his own,but quality hasnt been an issue for me at all-and have only found one or two for whom it is-for those out there pondering a cayman purchase-but i can certainly see the appeal of a GT2!!!
hope you enjoy it gavin
