Upgraded sat nav

Hi again,

Are there any sensible suggestions to upgrading the sat nav, I've a late 996 turbo, which only has a cd sat nav, ie no postcode?

I'm a slave to my sat nav on my rr sport. Is there the option to upgrade the disk to accept postcodes, or do I need a replacement system, if so, likely costs/options/suggestions

Thanks again in advance.

Nick

Yes you can put in a double din unit I have a kenwoo BT DVD Cd iPhone TV sat nav radio all in one .Its brilliant better than porsche sat nav as u can upgrade maps Garmin or tom tom for a lot less dosh check out caraudio4less in west lon for installation

What Model Year is your Turbo? If it is MY2001 or 2002, then it will be PCM1 (cassette player in head unit, and separate nav drive) and although you can get new maps, you would be better upgrading to a modern double-DIN unit.

If it is MY2003-on, it will be PCM2.0 which uses the fibre optic system, which is MUCH harder to replace. You have to replace the apm, and possibly the speakers.

You have to bear in mind that it is a 10 year old navigation system, and postcode searches weren't common at that time. I have PCM2.1 in mine, which was introduced late 2004, and it only has partial poscode searches. It is a shame, as I find the navigation routing and voice instructions very good.

The latest maps for PCM2.0 are dated 08.2009, and the map data is a lot more up to date than the original disk, if that is what you are using. There are a lot more POIs, but no other new features.

So what are my options, the Porsche manual says its a PCM, no mention of PCM2, although the Map CD's with it say v3 (There are 3 of them).

Ive been to a local car stereo shop, who tell me theyd have to replace everything, incl speakers, cost £2.5k ouch.

I could take some photo's etc if that helps.

You have two options.

First is to get the latest maps (an 8-disk set) which, as I said, are a lot more up to date than the 3-disk set you have. If your system software is Version 3, then the new maps are compatible. There are places you can download them. If you want to add a Bluetooth phone connection and/or iPod link, there are aftermarket kits such as Tooki, Dension, Mobridge, and ViseeO. Reckon on £500-ish if you have one fitted.

The second option is to remove the PCM and fit a double-DIN system. £2500 sounds a bit OTT. A good head unit will be £700, amp £350, and speakers £250 - plus fitting, of course.

Call Moj at caraudio4less. I and Dr Meng have had our work done by him. He is a genius and very reasonable. I would expect to pay approx 1350 pounds fitted for a seriously good setup. That includes double din, amp, speakers and fitting.

i agree the cost is mainly your din unit - his labour is cost is laughable as in cheap- i recently went back to sort stg out and he wouldn't take any money!!!

I've downloaded a 6 disk set which was listed as PCM 2.1

4 maps and 2x update disks, but they don't seem to work, I'll retry tomorrow.

Cheers for the recommendation chaps, I'll get in touch if the maps don't work.
