Upper cam box gasket

I've been a proud owner of a 1985 oval dash 944 for 6 months now..about 4 weeks ago i noticed that the upper cam box gasket is slightly leaking oil so i took the car into a garage..they told me that it has to be done at a dealer or specialist..phoned OPC Sheffield -
they quoted me £127 so i booked it in..but..after a quick look under the bonnet they told me that it will cost me ~£900 'cause they'd have to take off/change the belts and maybe tensioners a.s.o..

Does anyone know a place that would do it for a bit more reasonable price?
What's the worst that could happen if i can't get it done on time?
For the past 2 weeks the engine has been just dying off right after starting if i don't keep the revs over 3k for 15-30 secs..flooding?
It takes about 5 mins to start the from the 1st turn again..but the gasket can't be causing it..can it? Fuel filter?
When i was driving home this morning this morning it felt like i was running out of fuel - the engine was stalling a acceleration..

Finally..i apologise if the story above doesn't make much sense..it's just that i haven't been much into engines before..but you gotta start somewhere..don't want to carry on going to a garage every time when a fuse goes out..[&o]

If its leaking at the front of the cam tower (just where the rear half of the pulley guard meets the cam tower) or leaking onto number 1 exhaust runner, its probably NOT the cam tower gasket but the seal between the cam pulley guard and the cam tower.

If its leaking down the back of the head, onto the bell housing, its probably the cork gasket on the rear cam tower cover blanking plate.

As a price guide, that price is too much, unless they are going to be replacing the belts, some rollers and tensioners at the same time.

Your starting problem is possibly either ---- fuel pressure, coolant temp sender, airflow meter or possibly even the DME relay. But I would check those items out first.... or, one other thing would be a faulty throttle position switch.

If your car was cat equiped, I would recommend that it sounds like one of the above items has failed, and once the car has been running for a while, the lambda sensor is keeping the fueling within range, but when cold (before the lambda sensor has warmed up) its running open loop and due to the faulty part is allowing the fault to manifest itself as rich running.

All the best

Many thanks,Jon..
Just ordered a new DME relay..that was part of the problem..the other part of the problem seemed to be a fuel filter-i've just changed it-the old filter looked like it had been there since day 1..or maybe changed once-cause someone had to brake the fuel line and replace it with a rubber hoses before and after the filter-got 1 more thing on my to-do list now..
And about the gasket..well..looks like it has leaks pretty much all the way around..but at least i've found someone who has all the proper tools for changing the belts and tensioners..and he's done it before..the best part is that he'll only charge me about 1/3 comparing the other quotes i've received..so things are not so cloudy anymore..[:)]
Thanks again for the advice..
By the way..would you happen to know who might offer a full kit of genuine belts-tensioners-pulleys for the best price around?
