URGENT Fuel indicator problem

I have driven my 03 3.2s today and it is driving ok. However the fuel gauge said that i had 50 miles left on the clock so i refuelled £15 since it was not my normal garage. As i drove down the road i noticed the fuel gauge had not gone up so i pulled in the next service station thinking that the petrol pump hadn't worked. This time i put more fuel in but the gauge again did not move. It has continued to go down and now says i have only 18 miles remaining ie the distance to my indy garage which is closed. What is going on and is the fuel (nearly full by volume) going to run out if i get to zero.? Is this a reading problem if so is it going to burn a ruddy great hole in my pocket. I want to use the car at the weekend but am obviously anxious and the garage wont open till tue. Advice will be gratefully received oh wise ones.

Have you checked the gauge again after it has been resting? Sometimes the indicator does not get the right reading straight away but it sorts itself out after a while. I had once filled the tank up fully and the gauge show empty but it sorted itself out after a while...

Also, if you read your user manual page 64 it says:
"If the tank is nearly empty and you top up with only a small quantity of fuel, this cannot be registered by the level gauge and cannot be used to calculate the range on remaining fuel."

If you've almost filled the tank and it shows near empty, it will likely be a faulty/tangled fuel return sender. This is a common fault. Don't worry you can drive the car, but you'll have to guess how much fuel you have. If you're lucky it will correct itself. If not, the tank will need to be emptied and recalibrated and a new sender put in.
IIRC this will be around £150-300 depending who you go to. If you have a warranty it won't be covered, but you may get lucky and have it replaced anyway under warranty (as I did) by asking around.

Whats the chance it will sort itself out?
Oh and my extended warranty just ran out and theyve hiked the price up so i decided to wing it. Am sort of gald its not covered

Hmm....well mine sorted itself out for a few days, then died again...so doubtfull really, but I only have my experience to draw from.
I think there are 2 versions of the sender, the old one which was problematic and the new one. You can ask the garage to re-use the old one (although you risk the problem re-emerging) or get a new one installed.

Good luck!
