URGENT HELP NEEDED 40TH ANNIVERSARY MODEL PROBLEM

Advice needed for friend with 996 40th anniversary model. Car only done 20k miles from new and already had engine replacement 2 yrs ago after just 10k miles whilst under warranty replaced by Porsche.
After reteurning from a friends with engine warmed up the engine warning light came on. After inspection the coolant level was below the minimum and the lid filler cap has seemingly welded itself on. Then having just checked the engine oil level we have noticed and yellowey white kind of residue in the oil. Is this head gasket failure?????

I presume the 'yellow/white residue' is on the dip stick, not the usual mayo in the filler tube. Replacement engines are covered by a 2 year warranty, so I'd get straight on to the OPC

Yes its on the dip stick but the lad doesnt have an extended warranty. Porsche wear this do u think goven the engines only done 10k miles??? is it the head gasket??

Oops sorry richard i missed the point. It turns out that the residue he has spotted on the underside of the engine oil filler cap and not the Dipstick. Sounds very much like the engine was replaced by porsche 2.5 yrs ago but has as i said only done 10k miles. Sounding bas too you??

Milky white mayo on the oil filler cap is quite common and is often caused by condensation, so maybe not all doom an gloom yet. The water header tank is prone to failure and leaking coolant. Engine warning could be a number of less sinister causes like coil pack failure etc. Get the car checked by experts with diagnostic facilities.

The warning light in the temperature gauge also has various diagnostic functions - the light flashes at different speeds for differing faults, so thats always worth a look and post the results.

Sounds like it could be a split coolant tank to me too - although this could have been brought on by an earlier fault such as a fan failure.

From what you say, it doesn't sound too drastic. As Geoff says, mayo in the filler cap and tube is very common, especially in damp weather and if the car is used for short journeys.

When you say 'engine warning light' do you mean the Check Engine Light, or the temperature gauge warning light that David is referring to? As he says, was it on solid or flashing? Diagnosis here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=330170

If it was the Check Engine Light, as has been suggested, the first step is to get a diagnostic check done

im just checking with the owner now guys. many tks for the replys and advice. will be back shortly with some more info
