Urgent help needed

Sorry I know this is not 993 related but a friend is in dire straits and I don't know who else to ask. He has just bought a 2000 MY Fiat Coupe which won't run properly and the vendor wants it off his drive. Basically it is four cylinder, non turbocharged fuel injected. The problem is the engine revs uncontrollably when the throttle is pressed. My friend has absolutely no money, having spent it all on the car. Using all our vast combined mechanical knowledge is there anyone out there who can suggest what is wrong. ?

I had this happen on a Mercedes 350SL which had been standing a long time. It turned out to be the throttle cable/linkages mechanisms which were sticking and needed lubrication. Hope this helps. Yrs ever Michael AKA 2Ferraris
