Urgent Urgent help needed!

I have just got my Cam belts and chain changed.
However my mechanic checked the engine type before trying to set the timing and as a little amazed.

The engine type states : 42M / 41

However he says that all late 944's should be 44 / 41

Can some one explain why my engine has a different number??

He does not know what to set the timing too!!

Pls help

The best thing i can surgest is call a specialist like JZ and ask them. Things like belts, balance shafts have to be set with a special tool (P9201) and by someone who knows about 944 16V belts! My S2 1989 is engine code 41. Seems you've been very busy these past weeks.

All 944 engines should begin with M44, just as 928s begin with M28 and 924s with M24

The S2 should have a 41 after the slash and the Turbo will have a 52 ( I don't know about the Lux the S )

I don't know what M42 is but you really should get someone to look at it who know's Porsche.

I have spoken to Porsche Germany and they have confirmed from the enginer number that it is the orignal engine.
However they could not tell me why the type was 42m and not 44.
I can only guess its a typo and M means mistake?

PS my mechanic is Porsche specialist.

Must have been a dyslexic engine stamper at the factory [:D] lets hope he put the pistons in the right way round []
