US Ebay

Anyone had any experience buying items from the US Ebay site? I'm thinking more in terms of shipping costs declared value [;)].

There seems to be an awful lot more Porsche bits and pieces for sale.

Hello... I've bought some stuff recently from a firm in San Diego, value about $260. They kindly labelled the box with goods to the value of about $40 and therefore it didn't attract VAT (so far). Buying from eBay in the US a couple of times has been ok so far, though the cost of postage can detract.

I had a bit of a nightmare. I bought some parts from a chap in Toronto, via Ebay. At first, with a near two to one exchange and the parts not being too expensive in the first place, I thought I had a good deal. The total was $650 including shipping, or thereabouts and he very kindly de-valued the goods to $100 and declared the rest as shipping, ( I thought I was being clever). Three weeks later the goods arrived and the bill went soaring. I had to pay a handling charge, (fair enough), then an import duty and then VAT on the total amount, including the shipping charge!!![] It ended up that I could have bought the parts over here for about the same money and wouldn't have had the headache of sorting it all out. The handling chap said he sees it all the time and he knows of many people that have ended up worse off, as this country insists on charging VAT on shipping and the like.

Just a word of warning.

Regards
