USA Performance chips

so this might sound like a stupid question..but...

If you purchase a performance chip set from the US, let's say a Lindsey racing kit, super turbo, exhaust etc...the chips that come with it are designed for lower octane petrol are they not?

How is this overcome for European customers to get the maximum benefit from the set?

Thanks...

Gavin

Not a stupid question at all.

However, I don't think that the higher octane petrol available here would allow all that much more ignition advance. I would think that if you did optimise the chips to take advantage of the higher octane, the increase in power output would hardly be noticeable.

For example, my first USA chips were Guru and had different maps for street and race gas - which I think is higher octane than our "Super". I've just looked at the maps and the only difference with the race gas maps was 3.5° to 4° more timing in the WOT map which Danno's instructions at the time said was only worth 3-4hp from memory.

Equally, you could possibly run slightly higher boost - but only if you could add more fuel with a piggyback. I think that 1psi would be worth about 10-12hp?

I'm sure that you could ask the vendor, Linsey say, to burn you chips with our higher octane level in mind if you want every last bit of performance. Otherwise though, at least you have a higher safety margin in respect of detonation. [:)]

US-fuel is as high as we have here europe. They just use different octane measuring system.

I didn't think it was as high as the Super Unleaded in the UK?

Edit - Nope, just checked and US 91 is equivalent to our 95 and US 93 is equivalent to our 98.

Well, you learn something new every day!

I still think most of the USA chips are optimised for their 91, so the same as our standard unleaded, but there won't really be much room for improvement by optimising for Super Unleaded.

When i was young, i drove RHD cars occasionally in Liverpool area ( my dad was hired to British Midland airways with a Finnair's DC9 airliner).
