Used boxster

Hi all, I'm looking at purchasing my first porsche boxster (looking at a 2001) and was wondering wheather you could list any things i should be asking and looking out for.

I'm considering buying from a dealer as any issues with a private sale could potentially be expensive (taking into account the type of car it is) - is this a wise presumption?

Hi, welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will get many replies on the subject with many personal views, You pay's your money you take's your choice as they say. You buy from a OPC you get the back up, If pay less and go private you have to do your home work, or you hit middle ground by going to an independent. Just don't let your heart rule your head and I think you'll know when you've found the right car, just don't buy the first one and look at many.
Why don't you start here !

You could have a look at the hartech buyers guide: http://www.hartech.org/buyers.html

It can be a bit gloomy at time because it focuses on what can go wrong, so you jut have to keep in mind the huge numbers of cars out there with no faults whatsoever.

A dealer is only as good as the warranty they offer, don't assume buying there is a good bet - I imagine a lot of cars that have problems are traded in order that the owner can get rid of them as easily as possible. A private sale with the official porsche warranty is as good as a dealer.

I think it unlikely you'll find a 2001 at an (Official) Porsche Centre.

Some of the better Independant Porsche dealers would be a good bet though.

Try and get a car with the Porsche Warranty - this is unlimited whereas other warranty schemes usually have (insufficient) upper cost limits.

I'm not sure that this is the case as I don't think you have the same consumer protection when buying from an individual as when buying from a business, although I stand to be corrected.

Might be worth considering getting an independent inspection done if you decide to buy privately, see the classified sections of the Porsche mags

I could be wrong but I think you have to get it checked over by an OPC to get a Porsche warranty

You're right. Its something like a 111 point check, which needs to passed in order for the warranty to be issued by an OPC.

But the point I was making (prob not very clearly) is that you could have an independent inspection done if you find a car privately that does not have an official warranty. In any case there could be a lot of work that needs doing that would not be covered and you would not have the same re-course as you are 'buying as seen'. Hope I've made sense.
