Used Car Warranty

if i get a 1998 996, would i qualify for the OPC warranty considering the car is nearly 10 years old... if not, anyone have any recommendations what other warranties are out there that would cover the possible known maladies on the 996 e.g cracked liner/head, failed internediate shaft and rms problems...

Hi OPC Warranty is 9 years or 125000 miles. £895 per year though worth every penny [;)]

Just to expand on vron's input, the OPC warantee can be taken out UP TO the car's 9th birthday (thus covering it until it is 10 years old as the warrantee runs for 1 year). The mileage must be under 125,000 when it is taken out, but no limit to the mileage done in the year.

However, the card does have to pass an OPC 111 point check that will cost about 130 - 200 depending on which dealer you go to and anything wrong has to be fixed at your expense before the warrantee is taken out.

The most attractive looking alternative I found when doing my research is the maintenance plan from Hartech - they are Porsche specialists near Bolton and charge about (i think) 600 per annum which includes servicing and MOT and all labour, but not parts for servicing and any failures. Like OPC they require it to pass their major service / inspection first. The owner of Hartech, Baz is a big contributor on Pistonheads.

Personally I wouldn't waste money on 3rd party insurance plans - my experience is they're not worth the paper they're written on. They'll wiggle out of everything the can, be obstructive, have claims limits which is unlikely to cover an engine (c£12K), or gearbox (c£8K) and will likely not cover the OPC's hourly charges of c£110/hour + VAT.

All correct and good info, the one point Iwould like to make is that the car will not need the 111 point check if there is already a Porsche pre owned warranty in place at the time of renewal. So always ensure you renew your warranty at the due renewal date

thank you for advice... very helpful... the car i'm looking at wouldn't qualify for the opc warranty but will look at the hartech one... wonder if they will cover my car that it is in belfast... i'll look up their website

They cover the labour for repairs and servicing, so it would be at your cost to get the car to them for its annual service and/or if it broke down.

I've owned the same 996 for 5 years + and always had an aftermarket warranty. Tends to pay for itself most years. I think I've claimed against every one and never had a problem with claims - even Warranty Holdings after it went into receivership. Thing to remember is they are limited on the size of the claim so wont cover "the big one" <shudder> should it ever happen.
