Using Coolant

Mrs W's 2006 2.7 needs a coolant top up. Must it be the proper Porsche stuff or is there something else suitable? I presume 50/50 with distilled water.....

Thanks.

I am sure others will disagree but if the car has a Porsche Warranty then use Porsche Antifreeze if not any Antifreeze that is mixable and is the same quality will work. If its a small top up I would put it in neat as it will dilute with the existing Antifreeze.

John,

As Robin says, I'd be inclined to use the Porsche coolant if it's just a small amount to top up. If you want to save a bit of money, make sure that you use a coolant which is suitable for aluminium engines and silicate free.

However, if you're having to use more than just a small amount of coolant to top up, obviously you need to find the reason why this is happening.

Not all "coolants" are the same! Some third party brands have been know to react with the Porsche branded stuff and cause a right mess. Use the Porsche brand or a KNOWN equivalent.

Thanks. Indy said proprietary brands were ok provided they were silicate and phosphate free (for the above reason).

There were no big pools underneath so short of the engine self-destructing, which I very much doubt, I reckon it probably needs a new filler cap. Will keep an eye on it....

As Porsche coolant is longlife I assume according to this article it will be OAT.

my 3.2 was loosing a little bit of coolant i took the plastic guard off and found that i had a slight leak from a pipe on the drivers side return from the rad i moved the spring clip back and replaced it with a jubilee clip and that seems to have stopped the drip it was dripping onto plastic and not ground

I seem to have a similar problem. I've just ordered a new coolant cap which will hopefully cure it, if not, I may be back for some more advice!

I've occasionally found a little dried coolant residue under the top-up cap and found that the level had dropped, provided I keep the O ring seal clean it remains ok.

I've tried that but it still keeps creeping down the gauge.
I was surprised to find OPC prices better than all the ones on ebay, etc. £17.99 on ebay, £14 inc postage from Porsche!
