Usual warranty question

It's time to decide on whether to renew my warranty or not; I did get my money's worth last year, although I probably could've got a goodwill gesture from Porsche without it, but the £800 or so is a large chunk of cash to give away for a bit of piece of mind, especially given the £840 4 yr service & MOT, a £205 road tax bill, a £65 council parking bill and the £400 or so for insurance that I also pay. I'm already looking at a huge cost per mile on my 3 or 4 K a year, not even taking into account the depreciation. Obviously the warranty is likely to be great if anything big goes wrong, and since I've got a very low mileage car (11500miles so far) I'm probably statistically likely to experience issues that most other folk would've hit within the original warranty period. Anyway, my question is... is there any alternative after-market warranties out there that might be worth considering? (I already have RAC cover on my family-mobile so that portion of the warranty is not a big plus.)

Be careful about the excess and maximum value per claim limit of other warranties. Compared to the BMW warranty for example, the Porker one is good vfm and offers total peace of mind in case anything goes pop. Also, if you ever want to sell the car privately, having a Porsche warranty will be worth its weight.

that's true - when the missus insists my pride and joy is just too expensive to run at least the warranty will guarantee a good sale. Any other thoughts on alternative warranties - are there any good ones out there.

I'm not so convinced of the warranty at re-sell time, I just sold my 3rd old boxster sans warranty and got a very healthy price - in all the enquiries it wasn't an issue. I think its more of an issue to people who know Porsche, read the forums and are aware the reliability reputation is not what it once was - whereas people coming from outside the Porsche "world" see warranty as a bonus, not an essential.

You have to have your car serviced with them, but I believe that is included with the warranty. You don't have to buy the car from them.
The details are al in that link. Really does sound excellent to me.

FWIW Baz Hartech often posts on Pistonheads and is a very well respected man, as you say Mark, they are excellent people.

Peace of mind ...at least you can sleep easy not thinking about big repair bills ,although it does not cover everything Where the Hartech warranty is good no use to us up in Bonnie Scotland ...my last 3 Porsches have all had extended warranty

Knowing a bit about insurance you can assume the price of the warranty is for a reason ie there is a claims record. I am not willing to buy an extended warranty nor run the risk of expensive repairs so I am thinking it is maybe time to go either to new (er)Boxster or more likely backwards to older model eg 993. There was an article in Honest John ( D.Telegraph-Sat)a few weeks back where Porsche GB refused point blank any contribution to an expensive brake repair a few months out of warranty. HJ who is not the biggest Porsche fan flagged up the major reliability change post aircooled models

The warranty includes Europe-wide Porsche Assist, has no claims limit and no excess. So once you remove the Assist package, and remove Porsche's profit margin, the real premium is probably very low (if you are going to use that as an indicator of reliability issues). As Dapster says, compare that to the BMW warranty, and you'll see the difference. Therefore I see it the other way, the real premium is so low that the cars must be very reliable!

Anyway most of the minor things that do go wrong are repairable at very reasonable cost (with the help of Eurocarparts and an indi)[;)]
