V Belt...Warranty?

Just had my first service on my 2008 Turbo Tip at 23 months and 12,000 miles (most easy some continental touring, Factory visit, southern France plus about 6 gentle trackdays).

Surprisingly I have been told that I need a new V belt (which according to the scheduled service booklet requires replacing at 60,000 or 6 years)! My 996C4S ran over 30,000 mile before I sold it with no hint of drive belt wear.

Seems not covered by warranty, any chance it was defective or badly fitted? I am not amused and was considering taking two years extended warranty but it seems that most things are excluded.

Any views anyone?

I've had mine changed under warranty...
A few years ago mind you!

As part of a service it was only about £70 to have done... plus the labour if not as part of a service..

Considering it was advertised as a bumper to bumper warranty, it does seem to be a con in some respects...

Same here. Under the old, less comprehensive warranty I also had it replaced. Call another OPC and see if they'll replace it for free, they don't all apply the warranty in the same way. Either way it's a cheap and simple fix that can be done by an Indy if needs be.

Thanks Guys,

I am going to the only OPC on the Island this afternoon to discuss the extended warranty and I will request a warranty replacement.

I was quoted £204.00 fitted

Just looked up the service schedule and its £57 as part of the service, every 6 years or 4 on the Turbo...
Warranty or not, its not fit for purpose under that..

Mine had split in half !! along its length- so only half as thick as it should be..

Annoying that if it was in for service that they didn't do it anyhow.... I do appreciate though that they may have the advantage of being the only one... just remind them of the OPC in Ireland..... i.e. its closed down!

Mine was found to be damaged at the extended warranty inspection and replaced whilst the engine was out for the RMS and the bill was approx £200 ( might have been a bit less).

Hi Gary

Thanks for the info.

They didn't replace it because they keep virtually no stock here!

Usually before they order anything you have to pay up front.

The Guernsey OPC (same owner as the Jersey one) has closed down and the Guernsey folk have to get their cars here for warranty and service where an OPC is required.

Several good Indys here though and If I don't extend the warranty I shall wave goodbye to the OPC but then they stuff you on the residual when you want to buy a new one!

You cannot win on an Island!

Visited OPC yesterday to discuss extending warranty and V Belt situation.

Service Manager called in and belt inspected again by different technician (original technician on holiday, no idea of qualifications of new guy but I know that the original guy is fully Porsche trained) I was told that original notes say belt hard and noisy to be replaced. New guy happy with belt no replacement needed! I pointed out that if the belt failed before next service I would be looking to them for free replacement and rectification of any consequential damage.

I pointed out that I was extending the warranty for two years and had to ensure that the belt was OK as I couldn't expect any sympathy from the warranty administrators if I had failed to correct a fault that had been pointed out to me even if the belt itself was not covered because failure may cause other damage that was covered.

No one blinked so I am satisfied that I am covered if the belt fails as I reiterated the above to the technician, the service manager, the service receptionist and for good luck the Porsche salesman selling me the warranty! (I have names rank and numbers plus notes!) The latter did ask if the car had been tracked so I said yes, what of it? No reply

Incidentally the salesman told me that the price of the warranty had gone down and that more items were covered but he had no details nor even a price so I am taking it on trust! Factory closed so warranty apparently cannot be registered until Monday 4th January the last day I can take it out without paying the "expired" rate. Annoying as I had brought forward the date of service from the original one booked to make sure the Porsche trained technician was there (he went on holiday mid December and I have full confidence in him and wanted him to look the car over even though it was only a routine service but at end of original warranty). I then went on holiuday myself agreeing to sort the warranty out on my return.

Sorry to waffle on but I want to be accurate in case there is a problem.

Btw Gary the tyres are on their last legs (I shall try to get Conti's they lasted nearly 30,000 mile on my 996C4S with exactly the same annual use pattern. The Pirelli Corsa's may be a better wet tyre but they overheated at Le Mans this year and the wear is unacceptable at their current cost)

Also I seem to need new rear disks and pads while the fronts are OK but I haven't had time to look at the disks myself yet. I would have thought that the fronts went first.

Cheers all, let's hope for a good 2010
