Hi all, have just filled my 997c2s up for the first time with v power having previously just used the local tescos with super unleaded. will i notive a big difference do we thnk???

Last article I read showed Tesco 99 to be as effective as Shell v- Power but the latter's power output degraded after 1 week in the tank. No explanation offered in the text.
I'm back to Tesco!

The Tescos Super is 99 RON and the last time I read the Shell website it said that V-Power was at least 98.6 RON (which sparked off discussion that when fresh it is higher than this but it degrades over time). To my mind, and on my car there is no noticeable difference between either as the RON is so close

Anything over 98 RON is irrelevant for 997s at least. Unless you have your car re-tuned to run on higher octane, the car will only automatically adjust it's timing downwards from 98.

The difference is really what else they put in the fuel. Supermarket fuel is not meant to be as 'healthy' for your car as say Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate.

Here's an old 5th Gear review of various petrols: http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?lnk=601&featureid=143

I myself religiously only ever use V-Power. If I pass a garage with less than 1/2 a tank, I fill up there and then, just in case I run low later on and can't find a Shell garage!!

thanks for the input guys...im sure my local tesco super is 98 ron and not 99 ron so will have to check. given i use the car pretty infrequently i recon i may be better with the tescos gas although i take the point about it being cleaner....also i recon i have only added half a litre of mobil one in 2k miles...this about right u think? i done an oil check the other day from cold which took 45mins on the computer! am i best to get the engine warm first or run it for a few miles forst??

many tks for this andy very usefull. guess it means i can use any high octane fuel although the shell is probably the cleaner one. i wud never run 95 ron in the porka

I spoke to a lady at GreenEnergy, the suppliers of Tesco 99, and that has significant more cleaning agents than Tesco 95.

Having just spent my £3 cashback voucher on V-power... I think my choice is obvious...[;)]

The fact that Tesco Super(97) is the same price as V-power around here... and I don't have the Stigma of going into Tesco in my Porsche... not that I'm a snob or anything [] but I've had a few close door issues in the local Tesco as they double the pumps and the parkings a bit tighter than the wide Shell bays..

There.. I've even convinced myself [:D]

you should notice a difference, in mpg if not anything else.. its not immediate though

my local tesco is seemingly big enough for me not to have any "door concerns" but i take your point. a run back from nite away at the weekend and my 997s was doing 27.5mpg with v power and i wasnt exacly hanging about. ive only added half a litre of mobil one in 2k miles...that about right do we think?

gary, take it you are using a Shell Mastercard for your purchases ( 3% cashback on all fuel purchases etc ) ?

I am just discovering how amazing frugal the 997 engines are for their size and output. My twin turbo 335i ( running in still ) is struggling to reach 25mpg on the combined cycle which is no better than what I was getting from the X51 being driven much harder !

Using anything other than V Power would be a sin of course.

Like silicone ?

I alternate between Tesco's 99 and Shells optimax/v-power. The detergent properties of the Shell's juice mean that it's enough to fill up once every 1-2 months to benefit, while predominantly running with Tesco's Finest.
