V8 conversion

Has anyone dropped a V8 into their 944? What's it like? Is it amazing? Is it still usable as an everyday car? What MPG do you get? Still seriously thinking about this.

In our little community - none.

I would think that a v8, probably the 928 engine, (I don't know are the bell hosing mountings compatible?) would be the obvious choice and it would end up several BHP less that LIL and a bloody site juicier. It could well become the MGC of the 944 range.[:'(]

I believe that the 928 v8 is very heavy wheras the yank LS1 conversion gives you an engine that is very close to the 944 weight therefore not upsetting the cars balance too much.

I've often pondered the possibility of fitting the flat six out of a 911, say a GT3 or even a turbo into a 944. I know it's not the classic v8 but in my opinion the 911 flat 6 engine is just as classic and I think I prefer the sound of a 911 engine at full chat to the v8 burble. If the 944 engine bay is wide enough to accept the engine you would end up with a lower centre of gravity and a dry sumped engine. It would be an interesting project.

I don't think the 928 engine would be even close to fitting in the engine bay. Think about it: the 944 engine is half a 928 engine - where is the room for the other half?

How about this one [;)]

That's quite a conversion. Do you know any more about it like the reasoning behind doing it, which specific 911 engine it is (I assume a Turbo, though I guess it could be a blown NA version?) etc.?

Ive actually seen a 928 s4 engine fitted into a 924S, not sure exactly what needed to be done but the guy was a porsche specialist and it was still quite dificult to do but well worth it in the end !!!

Sorry Quarterflash, are you saying you have done this? I have been out to visit the Renegade boys in Vegas, looked at the quality of their conversion parts and it all seems very peachy. They fired one up for me...Awesome! As I say, I would really like to know what an LS-1 engined 944 is like as a regular usage proposition.

Hi
I haven't done the conversion but I have imported the LT1 conversion kit. It's sitting in my loft at the mo. If anyone is interested in it I have a daughter to put through university and so the dosh would come in handy.
