Vacuum Pipe Change

Hi,

I think I have a vacuum leak as car will not idle properly when cold is this a difficult job as I am a novice at this car repair lark. I can get the kit from promax but it loks like you need to strip off alot to do the job and how do I know what is vacuum pipe and what is not? One piece leads to a black oval thing at the top left hand wing just back from windscreen is that correct ?(Looks like alarm sounder but isn't) I want to learn but I am afraid of doing more damage. Any help would be cool a pic would be even better as no manual exists for the S

Thanks in advance

Regards

I shall be doing mine this weekend. Thanks for the prompt delivery Andrew LINK
Mine seem to be ok, just replacing old with new. You don't have to remove anything, just some places are awkward. I shouldn't think the S is different to the S2.

Pete,
I've just done this on mine. It's a job you have to be methodical about cause if you simply rip out all the vacuum lines you'll never remember which thingy was connected to what jobby, so I replaced the lines individually. The black oval thing you mention is something to do with the braking system I think, some sort of accumilator (I'm sure i'll be corrected if wrong). I didn't bother replacing the vaccum lines to this and concentrated on replacing the lines to do with the engine and fuel supply. I'll get round to replacing the brake system vacuum lines eventually.

Idling problems are notoriously difficult to trace. Replacing the vacuum lines is a good idea anyway, especially for the price of the kit from Promax but it probably wont solve the problem. Look for splits in the large air hoses that lead from the air flow meter to the throttle body to make sure you haven't got any leaks there. The idling microswitch is also a classic thing to check - this is pressed by the throttle cam when it's in it's idling position to tell the ECU the engine is idling. Also check your mixture at a garage with a sensor they slide up the exhaust pipe. I had an idling problem recently and it turned out the engine was running too lean. The mixtures were adjusted and everything is fine now.

Use the search function to look for other threads on this subject since there has been plenty.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for that will check what you listed problem goes once warm where is the microswitch located ? perhaps idle valve ?

I think you are referring to the vac reservoir.

On the opposite side from the throttle cable cam on the turbo, so I would guess similar on the other models, if you open the throttle valve by hand you should here a click as the microswitch operates just after you leave the stop.
